Just having a think about this today.
With Petrol at 89.9p and diesel at 105.9,
Is it worth paying that bit extra for a diesel anymore?! I'm after a cheap estate (ford escort) and you can get much better 1.6 pertrols compared to the 1.8 Turbo diesiels!
Make me wonder if I'd be better off swapping the vento 1.9 tdi for a 1.2 pertrol. (cheaper road tax too!)

Say the average diesel does 48MPG (being realistic). Based on 12k a year:
12000 / 48 = 250 Gallons of Diesel used.
250 * 4.54 (gallons in a litre) = 1135 litres a year used.
105.9 (price of derv) * 1135 = £1201 a year spent on diesel.
Same for a 1.6 Petrol (similar performance to a diesel car that could average 48MPG), say it does an average of 35MPG
12k a year again:
12000 / 35 = 343 Gallons of petrol used.
343 * 4.54 (gallons in a litre) = 1557 litres a year used.
89.9 (price of petrol) * 1135 = £1400 a year spent on petrol.
Still cheaper to use a diesel IMO

And, also, IMO, you cannot use a 1.2 petrol to compair to a 1.9TDi diesel.
Fair cop - my 1.9TDi averages 48MPG when I'm not doing my pathetic traffic filled commute to work (when the roadworks go in a few weeks). My mates Fiesta Zetec S, Kirstys Mums 1.6 Scienic averages 35MPG.

If you drive a petrol car (in good condition) econonmy i'd say now with the prices down, theres no difference, mpg ain't much different between diesels and good econnmy petrol!

Hate to piss on your bonfire:
40 litres = 8.8 gallons
380 / 38.8 = 43 MPG
Tax is also £101.75 for 6 months, £185 for the year.

380 miles from 40 litres is 43 mpg, not 48.
I also don't believe a Corsa 1.6 driven normally will do anything near 48 mpg - on my drive home from PVS this year, I used a full tank, cruising at 70-75 and only got 40 mpg.
I know Warren G drove at 55-60 for a full tank and managed about 450 miles, but thats not what I would call normal driving tbh.

Pow You got there first.
The tax does not reduce as its a 2000 car - I assume you are talking about your car, as its a 1.4, and therefore under the 1500cc tax bracket.
Pow is correct, a 1.6 Corsa costs £185 for 12 months, as I bought mine last month.

But if you had a Saxo VTR which averages 40mpg, but about 50mpg on motorway runs... You'd save a small fortune Buy one Pow

You are also basing all your economy on a 1.4 Corsa, not a 1.6, unless I'm very much mistaken.
And at the time, mine only had a cat-back exhaust - that definitely will not increase fuel consumption, unless you decide to put your foot down to hear it
And perfect car? I'm not too sure on that, but the reason I bought my 1.6 was purely because it is a fair bit faster and tuneable that a 1.4, and a much better drive due to the larger amount of torque available.
Pow, don't you pick up on the torque bit, please
