I'm talking camera's which I know people have, not compact cameras etc.

How do you go about transferring the pictures from your DSLR to the computer? Do you just plug the camera in via USB or take the memory card out every time? Just considering longevity etc. I also hate the idea of having my camera on my desk for ages. But then concerned about removing the memory card loads and destroying the reader in the camera.

I usually use USB transfer. Worst thing ever leaving your card in the computer with out realising.
But keep forgetting to turn the camera off after i'm finished with it on USB, so has a flat battery by the morning any ways.

just plug the camera into the computer My computer > E: Nikon D40 and my pics come up, drag and drop them into Photoshop from there

I connect with USB and then transfer with the camera. When you connect it, it loads EOS utility on the computer and once it's loaded up it comes up with some options on the camera too, Transfer All, Transfer new etc. so I just go to transfer new on the camera, ok it then once they're all transfered it tells you on the camera screen, press ok, close EOS utility on the computer and disconnect.

I don't really do anything on the computer apart from closing the software when it's done.

Obviously you have to set up what folder they go to first time but after that I don't bother with the computer

Oh I haven't bothered with Canon software, I just do it like mattk does.

used to just plug my eos in via usb but i ofund it very very slow.
so i bought a card reader and its much much faster now

Up until recently I plugged the camera straight into the laptop and downloaded with Vistas transfer files tool.

I've now picked up a card reader from Tesco and using that instead so don't waste any battery on my 5D

Depends what I can be bothered to do, I have a card reader on my desk at all times but can hardly ever find a usb cable lol.

The card slot on my 350d looks to be much more robust than the flap and the usb socket, also much faster.

usually usb (do have a card reader built in which i rarely use tbh).

i also put all that canon software on and its annoying as fook may have to uninstall it when i get chance.
