£50 id have that & just fit it in my parents drive for that price!!

Whether you can see the cables or not doesn't affect whether it can lift the weight or not. I would be asking why the cover was removed in the first place. My guess is that the cables have stretched and one side lifts lower than the other. Easily fixed and there's not disputing that it's very cheap indeed.
Shame he's so far away otherwise I may have snapped that up for the workshop where my Corsa is stored. Although I would prefer a four post.

It's not in the cleanest of garages is it though Ian.. Think of the years of dirt and grime getting into the cables and assembly.. Looks hydraulic too.. So I imagine the cables are part of the safety mech incase of ram failure..
Put it this way, I'm not standing under it
