Who here have been to University or are currently at University.
If so;
1. What are you studying?
2. Has it helped you get the job you want?
3. In hindsight would you have gone to University?
In my personal situation I feel I wastd 4 years of my life studying. Want to get into the film industry and its a "who you know" and "experience" industry which you get none of at University. In hindsight I would not have gone to University and would probably be in a job that I want to do just now.

Uni is a waste of time unless you want to be one of the following
Doctor
Lawyer
Teacher
All the other wishy washy courses are an excuse for the lazy wankers to arse around for another 5 to 10 years.

Its not just about experience and who you know, I got my job from who I knew and from my own self taught knowledge, if I was anything like the people I've interviewed for a job with me then I'd probably would of got denied.

Its both - you need to know people to get the chance to get the job (or just get lucky) and then you need to know what you're on about to get the job and be able to do it to the standard that is expected.

Currently doing a part time Degree in Business Information Technology. Work funded, and i love it!
Edit, oh, i've worked in ICT for 7 years already. Worked my way to from a £50 a week trainee to an IT Manager. All self taught and i've been offered each of my 3 jobs before being interviewed (same situation as Willay, wouldnt have got them if i had to go through an interview....because i'm shite at them )

Im at uni --
Wolverhampton, Doing a social work/policy degree.
Wouldnt call that a waste of time really, as i need a degree to get into that role of work. But meh- at times i wish i never had gone and stayed within IT.

I had considered going to film school but reckon that would be another waste of time and end up in exactly the same situation 3-4years down the line and by that time I would be about 27 as well

1. What are you studying?
I studied Naval Architecture (Yacht and Powercraft) at Southampton Solent University
2. Has it helped you get the job you want?
Yes I'm a Naval Architect designing Military and commercial powerboats
3. In hindsight would you have gone to University?
Yes, but would have changed my A-levels so I didn't have t0 do the 1st year Engineering foundation degree; I was actually at uni for 4 years in total; without the Foundation it would have been 3.

I got a degree in Computing.
I probably could have done ok without it but I would be on about £15k less and I wouldn't have got into investment banking without a degree.

Im at uni doing a single honours Spanish degree (after chaning from physics major spanish minor), and I dont regret coming here at all. Im still not 100% certain what I want to do, but it will either be a job in spain or a job involving spanish here in the UK (ive been looking at jobs in GCHQ recently which look quite interesting). so obviously being able to speak the language is a bit of a benefit
Some modules that im doing arent really relevant, such as one im doing now about late 19th centtury realist and naturalist literary movements, but suprisingly, im kinda enjoying it too cos its making me use an analytical part of my brain that ive never really used before.
If it weren't for my degree scheme, I wouldnt have had the opportunity to live and study in Spain for a year which was the best year of my life, and uni really is amazing for the social life. Ive met some amazing people in my time here and in spain, and dont regret for one second having come to uni.

Uhh I didnt mean that, I wipe the floor with interviews but if my knowledge was anything like most of the gimps i've interviewed I wouldnt of got the job. Too many people who think they can read a book, do an exam and then walk into an IT job. The fact is these passionless IT guys dont actually know anything and wont amount to much unless they pull their finger out.

Some people do go to uni and then do nothing with there degree or qulaifications if they get them, but labeling everyone outside of those 3 proffesions just shows either you know fuck all or you like fishing.

Anyone who hasn't been has lost out on life......FACT!

You have to be a certain type of person for uni, it doesn't suit everybody, I thought it was shit.
Was a good excuse for not getting a job for a while though

I never liked it, it's not for everyone.
I hated the soap dodging trampy element of it all, social life was good right enough....student loan and £1 a pint, good times.

I did Quantity surveying at uni and if I didn't have a degree I wouldn't have a job. I worked whilst going to uni for the last two years of my degree which helped me in my uni work as I had a better understanding of the course.
I believe your above statement to be utter pish.

Accountancy and Finance
Not sure yet but it has taught i DONT want to go into accountancy
Probly not, feel like im wasting my time and dont have the motivation to do the job properly (i cant stand sitting round reading books and doing homework, so its fairly pointless me going tbh)
I dont drink or anything anymore and not interested in the social life of it all, the majority of students are just pissed up and smell like has been said already, and have no clue about life, annoying as fuck

I'm doing a simlar sort of role to Willay and Aaron, IT Support.
Got my role as they wanted someone with a few IT skills who they could train up. I had a degree in Computer Studies and a years IT Support experience from my sandwich year. Went to the interview well presented and smashed it. Got offered the role the same day. Had to argue over the pay a little due to travel and got what i wanted as a starting salery. My skills have increased and so will pay eventually. I've also managed to get my MCITP out of them and a SonicWall course.
The place i work is alright, if you fuck something up they don't kick off. They will get someone to resolve this issue with you. Hours are flexible too due to the distance i travel. They won't chuck you into something you are not comfortable with either. Such as yesterday i was asked to install a firewall along with wireless at a hotel. They are going to allow me a day to mess with the kit which is quite nice.
