i will be wanting a full sus bike pref with all round disks, but am open to suggestions

why full sus? if you spent 1k on a hardtail, you would have one hell of a bike

Take a look at the trek fuel
Also, you can add money onto the top of them, the bike shop i work in even lets you pay the extra through 0% finance

I would go with
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/77-fx-2009-hybrid-bike-ec016808
Massive fan of treks and planning on using one to cycle across america, so would not recommend anything else.

You can normally add too the £1k, as it's normally paid by you up front and claimed back through work etc. It can work other ways as well, but I'm sure you can add to it on top.
However, if you do want a full-sus for under £1k, look at what Specialized have to offer. This will be more of an all round bike though, not necessarily super fantastic for out'n'out downhill.
If you will be using it primarily to get to work, too much of your pedal stroke will be lost on full-sus, so go hardtail.
Again, I can't recommend Specialized bikes enough!

Hmmmmmmmmmm £7250 on this....

OR,
£5995 brand new for one of these?

Got to wonder where the £7K+ asking price goes when you can get that, AND still spend £1200 ona bicycle..

I have recently bought a cannondale hardtail, which i love, its lovely to ride and you can still mess about on it too.
I wouldnt go for a full sus if your planning to ride to work tbh, all the bounce takes out your pedal strokes and you get nowhere as a result.

^ Not if you get something with the equivilant to the brain on alot of the specialized bikes out now.
Its the same with the linkage on the new giants, they are all designed to stop pedal bob.

can't you lock out the rear sus anyway and ride it as a hardtail? i'm new to mtb's and have never had a full sus so that might be a stoopid question.

You can do on some of them, only certain models of rear shocks have lockout
You could always just stick more air in it when riding to work, then take some out when going shredding

Essentially, yes. On older air shocks (which were still fantastic and well advanced) you had 'open' or 'closed'. However now there is 'smart' shocks which supposedly do it themselves and you have various setting for different riding conditions. Personally, I liked the old way

Pussy get a hardtail and "Man up"
A nice little Specialized P1 for £500 upgraded now takes me to work after my £2000 build was stolen
