Can't see anything on here about it, rumours of VAT being cut to 12% possibly.

Although they'll no doubt increase petrol prices or something to make it up it's a good idea if stuff is cheaper.

Even if they do increase every other tax because of it he majority of people will still love them so I think this is a good way to ensure re-election.

It'll only be recouped in other stealth taxes imo.

Research group has said it would be the best action to take to the end of 2009 and the offset probably wouldn't cost the economy or the government anything.

It breaches the EU's minimum VAT directive but if the cost to the government is minimal in comparison with the £24 billion it would cost there wouldn't be any extensive stealth taxes i'd imagine?

Just make smokers pay £50 a pack of fags, problem solved.

He's trying to get other countries on board if possible, trying to make out that he's doing something concrete to try and get the country and at least europe out of this mess.

Good spin tactics if nothing else.

Problem not solved, because every single smoker in the land would give up, so the tax would have to be paid for elsewhere.

Incorrect, well to a point anyway.

It's price inelastic, smokers will pay what they have to in order to get their nicotine fix.

the revenue from smokers is going down, as fewer people are smoking. They have to find it from elsewhere now.
