is the matter being dealt with by the police? when i got smacked on the head with a lump of concrete, the guy who did it went to court and was ordered to pay me £500. therefore, i couldn't claim anything from the criminal injuries compensation.

yeah it's going through the police, he's going back soon to be charged. But they didn't say anything about that on the phone.

Took me 18 months to get anything and that was fighting it every step of the way.
And once I got it the amount was that little so I was like why bother.

I didn't make a claim, but I got a cheque for £400 through a few months after it happened. It didn't say who it was from, but it was a Bucks County Council job, so I can only assume it was some kind of compensation for being bottled

My mate got stabbed by this guy last year, and he is claiming it and has been told to expect a couple of thousand.

I would have thought you must wait until the case as over, as if he gets a not guilty at court then how can you claim? would then have to be a civil matter through county or small claims.
Contact the officer in case with the police and confirm with them before doing anything like this, as i am quite sure they will need to know if you want to sue the guy.
If he has not been charged yet by police, you are a long way off as it will need to go through court.
It could even not get to court as it will depend on evidence, CPS decision, loads of factors. Do nothing regarding xompensation until you have spoken to the officer in case.
