i have a corsa b . currently running g max 40 mills all round , just wondering if anyone has chopped a few coils off the front springs to make them around 60 mill ??? is this such a good idea aswell looking at the safety side of it ? any help would be great cheers

I did a computer analysis on this  the results conclude it's fine as long as you cut them neatly with no sharp edges.

DO NOT do it, for what it will cost you to get some 60mm springs i would sooner be safe

I made a 3d model of a spring, cut 60mm off it, did an analysis by compressing the 3d model, got the stress results.
the stress was fine as long as there are no sharp edges.

conclusion = it's fine
personally = it's easier to buy some than cut them.

wouldnt it also depend on how many coils you cut off, and anr the 60mm springs harder than standard springs?? so wouldnt this be different too?

Cant see it being too much of a problem on if its only the fronts. However for piece of mind I would rather buy the real deal

yeah im thinking that now , even though iv just found some in the garage well i think there 60's , btww very clever stuff doing computer work on them haha im impressed cheers for the help lads !

personally ive done it in the past and its fine, only aslong as the spring seats properly in the spring cup..
the fronts would be ok to do but you cant on the rear as there the 'pig tail' type, if you only want to go 60mm then id just buy some 60mm rears as you can get some 2nd hand for about £20/30...

There snothing unsafe about it as long as its done on the right car and not too drastic.. I've cut plenty of springs over the years and its fine as long as there seated right etc etc..

alrite cheers for the advice , im guna try this out on a old set of 40 mill springs try and drop them to 60 and see how it goes , then ill try on my good set

WHY IS IT technically UNSAFE???????? as long as its done properly and i mean equally/neatly/safely i do not see why it would be UNSAFE....
Personally i would not do it i would just buy new springs but i dont get the safety thing as long as its done well................. you may interfier with the technology i.e if the spring is progressively wound etc but its still not UN-SAFE.

it is safe i know loads ppl who have done it but it makes the car bounce more so i would just go for 60mm springs lot easier and better handling

id rather have actual 60mm springs. imo its not worth it if the coil is thicker on lowering springs

i cut my springs down to 100mm on the back and never had a problem for over a year. iam back to 60mm now as i have speedbumps in my road
