Seen a private plate i like, thinking about purchasing it.

What is involved with the process? I have just purchased a car as you may have seen, came wit ha private plate that was due to be transferred. Its coming off in next week or so.

Anyone know what the costs/process is?

Also what does "on retention" mean.

Cheers

If you buy it from DVLA that's an everything in price. If it's not with the DVLA, i'd check on the DVLA website anyway as it 'might' be there.

You get the certificate, then just post it to your local office along with you V5 and job done. Takes a few weeks tho.

retention holds the plate for an annual fee say you buy a car thats too old for the plate you can hold it on retention

Also always buy from dvla as all transfer costs are included in the purchase but you currently hold a plate and buy a new car the transfer fee is £80 irrc

i have a plate on rentetion as i bought one in march. Basically its yours to do with what you will. You can put it on any car. After one year if you have never put it on a car you have to pay something like £105 to "keep it on retention"

This is what dad did.

Normal plate was LK52 YOE.

Changed to M3 YOE and genuine LED rear lights to make it dateless.

It's only dateless until the next one comes out.

Non car specific plates ftw.

Not just about age though

Although, I reckon a 53-plate Corsa facelift would fetch more than a 53-plate prefacelift.

But anyway, private plates.
