It's only being thrown out because the date is wrong. That doesn't mean the food is no good, it means the manufacturer decided that they don't want people experiencing the product when it's not at it's absolute best. The stuff might be fine.
Sounds minging when you tell the story but that man has actually got a very sound way of feeding himself cheaply. And I bet he's no less healthy than anyone else who pays top dollar.
Same with packaging. Presented well and nutritional and healthy are not the same thing.

I don't see the issue tbh, supermarkets, mcdonalds etc.. wast ££'s of perfectly good food everyday. If I was homeless etc.. you'd do what you can to survive. As said just because the date is over by a day etc.. doesn't mean the food is bad to eat. Look at your own fridges and cupboards I bet you'll still eat some items that are only just out of date or have done so without knowing any different.

I work in a pretty small Tesco on the fruit and veg section and at night we waste between £50 and £200 of the stuff. Majority is because its display until is that day's date so by law we cant sell it, if it was up to me I would bang it down to 5p/10p by item and it would fly off, but instead we chuck it away, we dont even give it to the local homeless shelter, which really infuriates me

I used to work at a Supermarket and yearly we used to throw £1.6m worth of food away which was out of date but the majority of it is still probably fine to eat.

Same here, I work at Waitrose, and earlier this year, we had to waste around 45-50 Cadburys Easter eggs as they didn't have the correct allergy advice written on them, was devistating

Incorrect.
Display Until and Best Before are guidelines only - by law shops can actually sell passed the Display Until if they're discounted & clearly labelled etc.
It's Use By which has to be disposed of.
Where I used to work, we would throw away all stuff passed Best Before and Display Until. New owners took over and told us to discount it, keeping it on the shelf. There was absolute outrage. The manager's husband works at Sainsbury's and said the exact same thing as you. We all looked into it more, including him and it isn't law to take it off.

I imagine that fresh fruit and veg has a use by date on though rather than best before..

Display Until & Best Before generally. Peoples idea of gone off fruit is different, and as has been mentioned, supermarkets take it off the shelves to limit issue of them selling poor quality products.
