Basically for one of my college assignments i have to do a report on a piece of contaminated land and dicuss how it go there in the first place and how to remove the contaminates.
I could pluck one from the sky, but i think it would be better if i used a live site as it were
Where is the best place to get reports for contaminated sites that go into some level of detail?

There is a site in Little Lever near Bolton, used to be a chemical works.

Still leaks shit all over the road when it rains, despite a major cleanup effort a few years back. Is also right next to a school, could see if there's any info on it if you're interested?

well the thing is who would i actually go to to get a site report and specifics of how contaninated the land is?
I think that would be fairly impossibe to do well

I was working on a site last year that was contaminated land, all the underground services ie gas and water mains had to be tripple insulated, and no grass would EVER grow on there 
also the only place in the world I have ever had bad hay fever, dont know if the land had any affect on that though

Hamish contact a medium size Quantity Surveying Firm or Housing Developers and ask them if they have any bore hole reports of containement land you could have

Guessing we are talking about contaminated ground in an area where a developer wants to build and not chernobyl or similar?
Depending on the type of contamination, hazardous or non hazardous the remediation costs would vary greatly, this would be shown in the geotechnical report for the land.
Once you know this then you can decide which route to take. Remediation of contaminated ground can take several forms, right through from bioremediation to vapour barriers. The most common method I have come across is the removal from site and treatment offsite; usually where excavation takes place the contaminated material is excavated to a fixed depth below the level of the foundation and imported inert material is used for backfill.

I'm currently dealing with a piece of land that is contaminated with 1950's rubbish...nice stuff....gearbox oils, batteries, acids etc etc.
TBH, my first point of call would be your LA environment dept, as I believe (given the likelyhood of good information flow between the LA and the EA ) their information will be more current. That's not belittling the site Ian posted, as that is a great resource too but the LA will have access to maps that wont be on the larger database (take my word for that)
Sounds like an interesting assignment that, it's such a complex area that in the real world you would 100% of the time employ a consultant.

Some useful info there, the most difficult thing in this sort of affair is getting the method statements and risk assessments in place to satisfy the CDM co-ordinator prior to any sort of physical excavation/examination of the waste.
Once you know what it is you can start to look at how to deal with it via waste acceptance criterias etc

Dont deal with contiminated land personally at work, but i do know we get in EnviroCheck reports which give you all the historic maps of the area and the like, but costs a few bob. Not really useful, sorry!
