My engine's been taken out today and looked at. Cause of the problems was a stuck side seal on one of the rotors. Doesn't end there though. A previous owner has run it dry of oil, and it's completely eaten the bearings. I replaced one in Germany, but the front is even worse.

So the knock on effect is that the eccentric shaft that the rotors turn on is scrap too, and due to the wobble that resulted from knackered bearings, the housings will need to be replaced along with the rotor as it's bashed them nicely.

Sooo, starting next week, it's rebuild and improve time, new rotors, housings and so forth, hopefully ready mid November for December. A lovely £5k Christmas present to myself I reckon, but not one that I really wanted yet.

Pics to follow in a min.

Ok, here we go:

The rotor has been bashed where the hand is pointing, jammed the seal and allowed combustion gasses past, you can see the carbon trails on the side of the rotor:

This bit has been contacting the housing, wearing both. It's possible to rebuild with the housing but it's very weakened so might fail again.

You can see the marks travelling horizontally across the housing where the apex seals have been juddering due to the off balance rotation. The bronzing has occured due to someone using synthetic oil at some point, a big no-no in rotaries, which just adds weight to the case that I'm paying for some idiot's mistakes and neglect.

Also note the wear on the shaft in the first pic.

More details? Rebuilt when and location?

Unless I can find an almost brand new engine with good history, I'm getting mine rebuilt. It's not worth forking out just for it to go again.

Oh it's getting sorted one way or another.

Forgot to say the primary turbo is goosed, so will still need the new ones I bought a couple of weeks ago.

Upside to all this is that I should have a very strong, brand new powerplant by next year.

Nahhh tbh i've got no Idea on 3rd rota setup. I know that a guy in Aus madea quad roter engine though

Rebuilds alone are like £3k+ arn't they (standard engine).

£3k assumes your major internals are safe to reuse, then just new seals and so on. This isn't the case with mine, so the price goes up.

There were two 3 rotors being assembled when I was down there, one at about £10k and the other at £20k. Just for the engine, without any ancilliaries, mapping or fitting.

There's two quads in Aus now, drifter called Mad Mike and another fella who drags with his, full street trim though.

Anyone who thinks rotaries are fragile should take note, I did over 1000 miles with it like this, including going round the Ring.

Just look on the bright side of it. Once it's done, you'll know the status of it and it will provide you with many years of fun

I believe marc at "the garage" which is in scotland has an engine that he had build by reworx for a customer but they never paid, so its just been sitting in his unit. Mind him telling me when I had my rx7 in for an MOT and coolant change.

http://www.the-garage.co.uk/

If you want I could PM him on another forum I use he is on and ask and let you know? PM me if you want me too as I will forget about this lol.
