Usually do it by going on holiday for a short break like Teneriffe for a long weekend and bringing as many as possible back
Allowed 3200 per person in europe
If you get them cheap enough sell them on can usually pay for your weekend away and possibly more
Buy at £12 - £20 per 200 sell for £35

There is technically no fixed limit on what you can bring back from Europe. It's what can be considered for your personal consumption so if you get stopped it's at the custom officers discretion

Transit van full of the stuff. Obviously not personal
I've been doing some calculations and its not a massive money maker. Depends how far away from dover you are i suppose. Still its a little extra pocket money and something to do

You can bring 1000s fags back with you on a duty free run on a bilbao mini cruise...
ferris coach holidays do them, only £60 for like 2-3 nights on ship and the fags are liek £16-17 for 200.

You'd drive 800 miles for some cigarettes?

There is no limit on the number of cigarettes you can bring back you can bring back from Europe (3200 is unofficial amount per person). But the amount you had would have to be considered for personal use, so if there is only one of you going, you would really have to stick to one brand. Coming back with lots of different brands would be a bit obvious you are going to sell them on.
BTW Customs are more likely to check a single male travelling on his own.
