Just read this on another forum....... Fu*king ridiclus i say......its not like any one made him drink it. This is yet another case of religious stupidity & a waste of time & money. He doesn't have to respect our rules or way of life but must grudgingly accept them if he & his family wish to live here. We have to do the same if we wish to settle abroard.

When in Rome...:

A Muslim who claims he did not know Tesco sold alcohol is suing the store for religious discrimination after having to carry crates of drink as part of his job.

Forklift truck driver Mohammed Ahmed, 32, worked in a distribution depot for eight months before quitting 'in protest', an employment tribunal heard.

He claims he was forced to leave because handling beer, spirits and wine is against his strict Islamic beliefs and that he was victimised when he asked the company to give him another role.

Mr Ahmed, who was raised in Saudi Arabia, told the tribunal he had no idea his job entailed handling alcohol when he started work last September at the depot in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

When he realised it did, he asked to be found different work but alleges that one of his supervisors told him: 'You do the job or go home.'

Mr Ahmed also claimed his line manager was 'aggressive' towards him and another supervisor angrily told him: 'Do not take the p***.'
The problem allegedly worsened in November and December when extra alcohol arrived at the warehouse in readiness for Christmas, the tribunal in Birmingham heard.

Mr Ahmed claimed he eventually lodged an official grievance with the company in February and was 'victimised and harassed' as a result.

Ahmed complained that he was made to carry crates of beer at the Tesco store.

The tribunal heard that Tesco has now ensured its induction process makes clear that handling alcohol is part of the job.

But Laura Canham, the company's solicitor, said it was still unrealistic for Mr Ahmed to say he had no idea what his duties would be.

Mr Ahmed claimed he had never visited a Tesco store and was not aware the company sold alcohol. He admitted, however, having shopped in Sainsbury's, Lidl and Asda, and noticing alcohol was on sale there.

Miss Canham said: 'He was advised at the outset what the job would entail. At no stage did he raise the fact he could not handle alcohol.'

The tribunal was told Mr Ahmed also gave out 'mixed messages', at one stage suggesting he was allowed to handle Budweiser beer.

Miss Canham denied the company discriminated against him and said: 'It would be reasonable to expect him to be aware of what Tesco did.'

Mr Ahmed, of Derby, who is suing the firm for racial discrimination, victimisation and harassment, should learn the outcome of the case later this week.

Saudi Arabia's enforcement of strict Sharia law regarding alcohol is among the harshest in the world. Sentences include several months' imprisonment for simply drinking beer, and it is not unknown for offenders to be given lashes as well.

A spokesman for Tesco, whose £63million Lichfield depot has around 1,000 workers, said: ' Managers are trained to be culturally sensitive and have an open-door policy to staff for issues like this, as everyone is welcome to work at Tesco.'

Im still asking the question where he handled alchole????

Surley it would have been in bottles/cans, and not only that, as he's moving packages, that means that these bottles/cans, would have been in a box with wrapping of some sort.

So box, wrapping, bottle, where was the alchole touched? Is this stinky mofo opening my beer, drinking it, pissing it back in the bottle, then moving it?????

As I said before, there's probably more to the story than the reliable publication is letting on.

No doubt what actually happened was he said he couldn't handle alcohol due to his religion (which is fair enough, no different to not being allowed to eat certain things) and his supervisor told him to do it or fuck off. I think people forget that religion is important to a fucking lot of people and there's also a hell of a lot who are intolerant when someone tries to stick up for himself.

This is probably just an unfair dismissal tribunal which the paper has got hold of and made a bigger issue over.

Very true Jambo but do really think thats exactly what happend in black and white?

I'm pretty sure if there was a competant manger of a Store and this happend, I am sure they would just change them to another department such as Produce then see how long he lasts lugging veg around.

The fact something this trivial is in the media really really highlights there is more to read between the lines.

Surely a large company like Tescis would have the savvy to solve a simple issue like this without such a high profile media frenzy?

Seriously if you are Veggie/Sihk/Muslim (and i am sure they all work for Sainsbury/Asda/Tescos) they aint going to stick them on the meat counter are they?

A bit of common sense needs to prevail in a situation like this tbh

Oceansoul, firstly this is old as you know. Secondly, your topic title is misleading. Nowhere does it say he sued Tescos.

I agree with Robin, the media has a tendancy to jump on the controversial lines in a paragraph and rape them with their own propaganda.

Disagree, you can't sterotype people. A lot of immigants are white polish etc.

TBH a lot of people probably feel the same, hence why so many people are emmigrating. We need strict immigration rules here in the UK. We're Great Britain and should be able to pick and choose who we let in. Not give everyone entry and a life of benefits FFS
