They are ok, depends what you want in a car. Nice, comfy, pretty quick, ok handling, come with decent kit as standard.

Make sure its had a cambelt and water pump done if due, clutch is a pretty costly job if its needing doing.

Loads of info on Audi-sport.net if you need any.

only really know about the engines, as said get the cambelt and water pump done, i would probably do it even if its not due as the standard water pumps had plastic impellors which are known to fail.

I think they're lovely looking cars but cant comment on how they drive

Damian has been selling that for nearly a year now. The price of S3s has plummeted in the last few months so now is an ideal time to pick up a bargain.
There is alot of choice out there so be picky, again check for cam belt and water pump if coming up to 60k, check for corrosion around the roof channels as this is very very common, usually covered on the 12 year warranty though.
If its had a remap give it a good thrash to check for clutch slippage, they eat clutches after remaps and cost atleast £500 a time to replace (standard audi, more for performance clutch)
Also check for Haldex servicing (rear diff) should be every 20k, failure to service can result in a very very big bill if it fails.

After having two i dont know if id have another, but they are nice cars, comfortable and nippy. Just damn expensive to run and maintain.

It has gone up but only 2003+ S3s will be hit with the big one (£400 odd)
Most facelift S3's will be going up to £300
If you get a pre 2001 then you will only pay the normal 1.6+ tax band (about £200)

Pre 2003 is £310 from 2010 according to Parkers.

Thought everyone with one would rave about it but doesnt really seem the case! If you had the choice then what would you get for upto 8k. Preferably hatchback, comfy and remotely fast

IF you want a comfy, fast hatchback its a great car. Just don't expect back road racer. It is a good all round car and can be very capable. I've been really happy with mine to be fair.

S3 all the way then, aslong as running costs arnt a bother to you...

As Joe said, they are a very capable car, just not that great for a good b road blast, sure the speed is fun, but the way they drive is quite un-involving and feels very 'safe'... hard to explain but i know what i mean!

Try to buy one thats had all the handling mods done that it should have had from the factory, uprated ARBs, adjustable tie bars, uprated shocks and springs, brake upgrades are common too as the S3 brakes are piss poor in standard form, both my S3s had upgraded brakes 1st ones had Brembo GT kit and my last S3 had Porsche Boxster setup.
