Some places charge like thousands of pounds to put you through it.
Not sure on experience probably same as to sit in with someone, so over 21 with 3yrs or more experience.

Its not a career id want, think you'd get sick of sitting in a car all day..........maybe not tho. I just dont like to mix business with pleasure!!
Keep in mind to make the 30k or whatever these places quote you need to work 70hr weeks, weekends etc

yeah i know what you mean,i enjoy driving alot and i had the chance to teach a girl i know how to drive.she passed 1st time with flying colours only getting 2 minors which made me happy.i would be prepared to put the effort in aslong it was getting results for people im teaching.i tried bus driving out which was fun (may even give it another go).but i didnt like the idea of a fixed term of a 2year contract with that.(i.e if i left before the 2 years i pay the whole course) where as working for them i pay it off in stages.another reason i didnt like that was it was messing with my social life.maybe when im 25 i will want abit more from life and think further with my career prospects.

If you go on the AA website, if you fill out the amount of hours and the location you want to teach, it gives you a complete pay structure. Worked out about £34k *after* franchise costs etc with a new car every 6 months free of charge on 45 hours a week.
You have to be 21 + have held a driving license for 3.5 years. I am taking this career at the earliest possible opportunity.

Here we go. 45 hours with 3 weeks holiday per year would set them back
Income
Hourly lesson price in (TN) = £23.00
Estimated weekly income from lessons = £1035.00
Estimated annual income from lessons = £50715.00
Outgoings
Weekly franchise fee = £196 inc VAT
Average pupil introduction charge paid per week is £15.57 inc VAT
(based on average of 27 introduced in a year based on £30 per pupil).
Average fuel costs per week = £65.22
Net weekly income before tax and N.I. = £758.21
Net annual income before tax and N.I. = £37152.13
£37152.13 = £29/£30k tax

£200 a week, plus the 3k or whatever starting fee.
it all looks good when its like that MJFF, but when you take out holiday/sick time/times you dont feel like working/times when you cant fill your slots etc...

But the key word above is ESTIMATED.
How do people find out about you?
What if not enough people in your area want to learn to drive, or there are too many instructors for the demand?

By being with the AA, you'll get people contact you via the AA. It isn't as bad as setting up on your own.
http://www.theaa.com/drivingschool/index.html
People will use that and who ever is in their area will get contacted.
Being a franchise is more guaranteed work, because people contact the brand, not the driver however you have more overheads.

My driving instructor has just quit doing it due to having to work all hours to make a half decent wage.
Petrol Prices hit him hard too.
I couldnt be a driving instructor. Im too impatient and have a bad temper with a short fuse. I would end up shouting at the learners as they destroyed my car.

How much do driving lessons cost these days?
My wife has been quoted £28 an hour, I think thats about the rate here in Aberdeen.
I suppose thats still not a lot of money for what must be a lot of boring work.

Just looked at those figures again.......
45 hours a week of paid lessons is going to VERY stressful - you'll never be out the car.
If you wanted to do it over 5 days that 9 PAID hours a day - you couldn't do it.
Even over 6 days thats 7.5 hours per day without travelling from one learner to another. Assuming just 15 minutes travelling and 4 learners per day thats another hour travelling, eating lunch while you go.
Personally, I don't think 30k is anywhere near enough!
