Went with one of my bosses yesterday to collect an Audi A6 Avant SE 1.8T yesterday. Nice car, but on the way back the oil light came on and it started to rattle.

The oil level is fine, and the rattle sounds like it's coming from the top end, like it's dry.

Are there any known faults with these engines regarding low oil pressure or pump failures?

cheers

Some have a chain to work the VVT I think, possibly that. Its only a guess though and I don't think they all have the chain.

Jr will possibly have a good idea.

99%it will be the oil pick up pipe in the sump, they get clogged up, and obviously cant do there job, and then fuck everything else if not replaced in time

worth replacing the chain and tensioner if it still rattles after that

be wary, turbo is proberly fucked as well because of the oil pick up issues

It came from Car Giant in Wilesdon.
They've agreed to pay for an hours diagnosis at a local garage, so hopefully they can find what the problem is.
Blocked pickup pipe sounds logical, so hopefully they find that and there's no more damage.
On the plus side the garage that it's gone to have 2 race leon Cupra R's, so they should know a fair bit about the engine type.

Robbo, the coolant temp was fine. It was the oil light that came on before the top end rattling started.

cheers
