McLaren's appeal against Lewis Hamilton's drive-through penalty at the Belgian Grand Prix has been rejected.

Hamilton strongly pressed his case at Monday's appeal to the FIA in Paris as he aimed to overturn a 25-second penalty for cutting a chicane at Spa.

The 23-year-old was demoted into third, with Felipe Massa handed the victory.

If successful, Hamilton would have seen his lead increase to seven points over Ferrari's Massa, but the five judges have upheld the stewards' ruling.

from the itv f1 website:

quote:
Lewis Hamilton has failed in his bid to have his Belgian Grand Prix victory restored after the FIA judges declared that McLaren's appeal against his penalty was 'inadmissable'.

Much of yesterday's hearing in Paris had been devoted to arguments over whether the appeal was actually valid, as the penalty was officially regarded as drivethrough that was only applied as a time penalty because the incident took place so close to the end of the race.

Under F1 rules, drivethrough penalties cannot be appealed.

McLaren's lawyers had attempted to argue that it should be regarded differently because Hamilton never took to the pit lane and the actual penalty applied was a time addition.

But after a day of deliberation, the FIA has announced that there were no grounds to appeal the decision and that the penalty stands.

"Having heard the explanations of the parties the Court has concluded that the appeal is inadmissible," said an FIA statement.

The verdict means that Felipe Massa retains his inherited Spa win, and that Hamilton goes into the final four races of the season just one point ahead of the Brazilian in the championship.

Its a complete farce, not only was the penalty added on after the race (hence not a drive through, regardless of whether it should have been) but also mclaren actually have a recording of the discussion with the chief marshall during the race and he said what hamilton did was fine.

Well atleast we know who's paying the most in F1.

He's still leading the championship.

Time to put it to bed and get down to racing.

F1 isnt about racing. its about money, tv ratings, money, sponsorships, and erm money. the drivers and cars are a by product and the results merely trivial.

Agree with hammer, as much as I disagree with the decision I would suggest he can't let himself be too bitter over it as he'll probably go off in the pit lane again

He needs to prove he can win the title regardless of all this controversy imo.

I think he was in the wrong to do what he did. But I dont think it affected the outcome of the race.

That's nice.

They still race cars though, therefore time to put it to bed and get down to racing.

I hope massa's car explodes into a fire ball this weekend.

Although somehow they'll say his car was impaired by McLaren's hands and he'll win anyway
