I'm working on grade 4 piano and 6 drums. You should go for it! Piano/keyboard?

I was thinking just going for keyboard as I have one. I play the drums but am wanting to play an instrument you can play tunes on. When did you start?

Cool man! Well yeah, keyboard is a great start. It will save you wasting your money if you give in after 5 weeks lol!
I started to play drums 8 years this xmas. And started piano roughly a year ago...
Oh yeh, I'm doing grade 2 music theory as-well!

Thats excellent. The reason I wanted to start is because I was making wee short films and instead of stealing music I wanted to write my own. ie instead of trying to get something to fit in I could write something in accordance. Any useful books you know of?

Oh I get you, awesome! Tip for composing - have a wide music taste! Helps loads!
Hm... well depends on what you want to learn really. If it's notation your after then Music Theory in Practice Grade 1 is a great book to look at. This book looks quite good - http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/07311/details.html
All depends on what you want to do?
Have a look on musicroom.co.uk, they are the best for music books

I know it would help but am not really too interested in reading music, just knowing what I am playing if that makes sense> I have a huge range of music taste from 80's synth to Classical , only stuff I hate is rap crap.

Yeh I see. Well Grade one theory would teach you about which notes go together well.
Don't suppose you use Mac? Garageband is the free music sequencer that comes on Mac, and on there you get 100s of samples. Thats like melodies, baselines, beats, basically everything you need to make a song! All you would do is pic the samples and arrange them!
I think Fruity Loops, a similar program, comes with samples too, and it's PC based!
Thats always an option?

The mac route as am told theres less viruses etc. I suppose I could compose on the keyboard and record it, then put add effects, backing tracks etc. I think a Moog synth would be brilliant.

I went down the mac route last christmas, and I have never looked back! There no, freezing, stopping, pointless updates, and loads more! Just the whole OS when compared to Windows is brilliant! And at the end of the day, you could run Windows on it anyway if you really missed it! But don't get me wrong, i'm not knocking Windows at all because they have domineered the computing world for a reason! But I think Mac is coming back.
And for music, there faultless!
Yeah, what I do is run my digital piano into Cubase and record that way. Then I can add effects etc... like you say! Moog synth would be indeed brilliant!!

amazon for a load of piano books, more so grade 1 theory and grade 1 pieces. And youtube is a good way to learn. But personally i would yellow pages for a local piano teacher and get some lessons, best way to go to be honest!
Oh and a little piece i knocked up within a few days for uni coursework - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlF5BOiTXXk (timing is a little off, but that's because everything was played in and i couldn't be arsed quantising everything).
