Just got my quarterly bill through online

Gas - £52.98
Electricity - £79.39

Gas is used for central heating and heating water for showers / washing up. The central heating hasnt been on, we only usually have 2 showers a day and wash up once a day

Electricity really shocked me though, does my LCD telly and Xbox360 really use that much leccy

I pay £30 a month for each.
Im in credit on the electricity, although with the colder weather coming the gas bill is likely to shoot up.

Gas bill on it's own here for my mum and dad was £750 for the quarter, over what they pay by direct debit.

Something not right somewhere.

that can't be right.......must have the gas on 24/7.......

moving to alternative energy sources such as solar power costs a lot of money and would take some time to recoup your costs against savings, but if your parents are honestly spending that then they should look into it very quickly

Well I rang my dad and he reckoned that sounds about right. I thought the gas was expensive considering we have probably 20 showers a week and wash up dishes once a day and no heating.

The electricity shocked me tbh (no pun you fools ) we have a few things running 24/7 -

Burglar alarm
Wireless Telephones
Router
Fridge/Freezer

And then we have telly, laptop, PC, washing machine and obviously the oven and hobs. Try to be as efficient as possible but obviously the rises have affected them massively

Ive just upped my DD to £30 a month for it, bought one of those energy monitors you plug in because the fridge doesnt half make a lot of noise so going to make sure its not on the blink.

I know what you mean pow, I work at Tesco, their electricity bill is like But then thats what you get for having a hot chicken counter in the middle of the fridge department

No idea what my parents bills are, I will take a keen interest when I start paying rent when I finish Uni & have a job.

Where I used to work, at 'Spar', a relatively large but small convenience store, the electricity bill was £15k/year dread to think what Tesco's is like.

We got our first monthly bill in...

£12 electricity
£42 Gas

Not to bad considerin the heating was on permanantly when wefirst got the house for about 3-4 weeks,...

Set up a direct debit of £82..

Although just switched to npower so it may go up slightly...

Not bad though for 8 weeks worth...

So im being tight then?

I got one of them EcoEye enregy monitor thingies and spent the after noon going round the house. TV, PC and Xbox are the biggest culprits at like 150 - 200w while in use, so the cooker is a right bastard, everything else barely registers, like 1 - 10w in use

if you turn your gas meter round the needle goes backwards and the numbers go backward. dont get too greedy and leave it reversed for ages otherwise you will end up with a number less than your lass reading and you will get caught

in fact dont get caught at all because they are very very very very heafty on it

even though there are 2 Corgi plumbers in our house we dont do it

Matt, if I had the slightest idea of what I was doing without the possibility of blowing something up I might of given it a go
