Depends what course.

I did computing and probably bought about 3 books over the 4 years I was there.

Any books that were recommend for our course were in the uni library in large numbers!

Yeah anything the lecturers recommend (usually something they've contributed to) is in the libary. I've bought a couple of engineering books, but only ever used them a couple of times, so I wouldn't bother unless you can't borrow them from the libary....

I've just dropped my sister off at uni for her nursing year 2, her bursary will cover any books she needs and whatever is recommended she just buys, however I recommend you do a basic nursing course first because you are more likely to get a job in midwifery afterwards, my Mum is a nurse/midwife/medical rep, my oldest sister is a nurse, my 3rd oldest sister is a nurse and my fiancee is just training to be a midwife after doing the nurses degree and they say the competition for jobs is fierce with all the cut backs.

I'm doing Marketing & Media Practices.

I had a huge background from GCSE to AS and A-level in Media & Business, so didn't feel the need to read up.

However when I started Uni, there was loads of recommended books for each modules, and a compulsory books. I've kept them all, 'cause I'll keep them all once I graduate. Buy a few so you can get a background knowledge like you're doing, but don't go mad. Save the money and buy the books you're told to do.

P.S. I have 11 books from 2 years of Uni study so far.

Ive bought books with the intention of reading them, just hasnt happened. If you feel like you have to buy a book, buy an older edition off sellstudentbooks or ebay etc, if you are actually going to read the books can buy the newest editions, as they will have the latest information in them

If you have the time or the inclination though, the majority of the books you will ever need should be provided in the library

I'd sooner go to the library to borrow a book if I needed it. For my course our lecturers provide us with notes. But most of our work is graded on practical work and presentations and anything we need for exams is covered in the notes we are given, the notes I have made in tutorials and lectures or from stuff we have learned in lab sessions.
