Morning folks,
Basically bought my car from JCT600 in February this year (usued 54 Plate Asra Coupe) & took it for my MOT yesterday. All went well apart form brake's were unbalanced, so if failed. Said it would probs just need a new brake pad, so told them to sort it, no problems. When they went to take the wheel off they had a bit of trouble, as it was late (4:30pm) they said there was nothing they could and would call me back today once they had managed to get it off.
I've just had a call from them now saying that reason they couldnt get the wheel off was due to the thread in the wheel bearing crossed with the thread on the wheel nut due it not being put in correctly. They then told me i'll need a new wheel bearing, which will cost about £450
Now, when I bought the car from JCT600, within the first couple of hours, the wheel in question had become loose, I just presumed somone had forgot to tighten it properly, so just did tightended it up again. It happened again, so I tightend it again, then a couple of days later it happened again, so I phoned JCT to let them know, there advice was to tigheten it again as tight as possble, and see what happens. If it came lose again they told me take the car back. So I tightended it up & nothing happend, so just carried on driving it around until yesterday when I took it in.
Now obviously I didnt have any problems with the car, the wheel or anything like that so I had no idea that the thread was crossed, its only come to light due to them having to take the wheel off (If my brake pads would have been ok, I doubt they would have noticed) so, what i'm asking is, should I be held responsible for causing the damage, or could it be possiblt that it was already like that when I bought it, and thats why the wheel kept coming lose?
My argument with them is, that they should have asked me to bring the car in straight away to check everything rather than just telling me to tighten it up. Now I understand that they or I cant prove when it happened, but IMO it must have been sold like that, as i've never had the wheel off or anything apart from yesterday.
Sorry for the essay, but any advice/experience in something like this would be appreciated as I dont have nearly £500 to spend just now

Yeah it did, got a warranty & MOT insurance for the first year when I bought the car, asked about this and apparently it's not covered
Just phoned Kwik Fit for a price and there quoting £132 for the same job doing

£450 is a ridicolous price anyway.
Personally; I'd say you never touched the wheel nut and hope the phone conversation isn't on record anyway.
Blame JCT from before you bought the car.

I'm wishing I had never touched the wheel nut at all now, just it was an easy soloution as the garage is quite far from my house & it was a ball ache going all the way over just for them to tighten it.
From what i've heard from other garages it seems they have given me the wrong wheel nut for the bearings, and when i've tightend it up its knacked the thread inside

UPDATE
Been arguing the toss with them on the phone for about 30 mins & they say they are going to do it for £200 (inc MOT)
Still a lot to pay, but at least it's not £500. Expensive lesson to learn I guess, but now if anything goes slightly wrong with any other car I'll be taking it straight back to the garage
