stay away from it, we had one for our dump car at work that come in part ex, with 37k on the clock.
Went bang on the motorway, overheated and expansion tank burst, i think all the little contact points on the distributer all wore down and it wouldnt start, gearbox fucked up, wouldnt change into lower gears without a real struggle, electrics went onit,,,
There slow and roll like anything loads of understeer, horrible horrible things.
From my expierence id stay well away from them, nothing but hassle and problems

This is for a housewife with 2 small children.
Doesn't need speed, or great handling, just a cheap little car for under £1k.
800cc NA engine, how far wrong could I be, least they are 3cyclinders

a mate of my sisters has one and it went on fire all of a sudden so look for fire damage or fire coming out it when you go to look for one.

Worst car i've ever driven by miles; feels extremely unsafe, the pedals feel as if they're going to snap when you push on them, the gearbox is clunky and cheap feeling, the handbrake is terrible and it doesn't go round corners. You also get poor mpg as it's pedal to the floor in every single gear, my mate used his sisters for years and it used to cost him a fair bit in fuel for what it was.

Dave - Too expensive, think shes only got like £800 as her other car was rammed and written off.

Regardless of how good it might be on MPG etc, you mentioned that her other car was rammed... well I doubt a Matiz would stand up to any kind of punishment, and I wouldnt risk buying one for 800 if kids were involved.
For 800, he should just get an fiesta/corsa etc. Same on fuel, and alot safer
