I had a letter through this morning, from the Student Highway Robbery Company. I owed £15,000 roughly, but after a year of repayments I owe approximately...

£15,000.

Going to start paying lump sums off now. Bastards keep doubling the interest on it, was so tempted to just fuck it and go bankrupt, but I'm not one for the easy way out.

I did more of an audio and sound engineering course, but this industry works on a "who you know" basis, so if you know Steven Spielberg but your work is similar in quality to that of a pile of roadkill you are certain to get work.

Yeah I realise this, but I still think it's shit that I get raped over it whilst my brother's delinquent gf sits there being paid similar amounts for pumping out little bastards.

I worked for Gap for a year, whilst flinging my portfolio around all over the place. Eventually got an interview, won the job with my rendering and animation skills. You gotta have something unusual, my thing was taking CAD models and making them look real.

Excellent, so I suppose the struggle pays off in the end, you got a site with any of your work?

Only got some old stuff on here:

Animation

That was in Max (anim is a bit dark after compression), use Maya now, get much nicer effects:

Hmmm worrying...................

Ive got approx 9k of student loan debt.

I know the interest has went up recently as it surfs the boe base rate....I think?

Ive got the money still in my account, didnt need it, took it - free money woo, made a few hundered from interest.

Was meant to start paying in June this year for one, other kicks off next year for repayments.

Should I just pay this back asap then aye?

My advice is to check it ASAP.

Don't get stung for it, people kept saying to me "it's great, cheapest loan you'll ever have, etc etc". Fine, probably true, but it sneaks up on you, rips off its Glaswegian kilt and rapes you when you least expect it.

As for the model, took a month from initial sketches to finished renders, another 2 weeks on that for the animation. I actually started it on Christmas Day 2006

I could pay it back tomorrow, on the other hand I could pay off (along with other cash) a chunk of my mortgage!?

Not sure what to do, student loans, everyone has them, ive never looked at it as a bad thing. Its the rise in interest rate thats fucked it up.

Is your mortgage fixed or variable though?

I'd pay off the SLC, your mortgage repayments will be constant, and once you go offshore you'll be making more money than you'll know what to do with

Im out of a deal just now.

I was going to pay off a chunk of it then remortgage & pay the place off in 2 or 3 years. Keep it to rent out.

Or I could just become debt free.

You never really know what to do in these cases as no ones on hand to advise whats best.

I'm in the same boat as you Ash, I owe around 14,000 ish and it's rising at a stupid rate.

The press always said...

"Take the maximum loan you can, it's the cheapest loan you can get, you don't need to pay it back till you're earning over 15k and you gain more interest on it with it in your bank account".

However, this was when the interest rate on the loan was around 1.2%

Unfortunately, the rate of interest on the student loan follows the trend of inflation!

Therefore the % went 1.2%, 2.4%, 4.8% and I'm not sure what it is now / next year but since inflation has hit a all time high it'll get worse.

I can't believe it's not really mentioned in the news recently, a lot of students must be feeling the crunch from it as a lot don't get a job / well paid job after.

I could pay off all mine in 1 lump sum now if I wanted, but I A ) don't want to be skint and B ) am spending most of it on travelling around the world

but currently, in my saving account it's gaining me more interest than I'm losing in theory.

AFAIK the student loan interest is calculated as inflation rate in the March just gone in September of the same year? So atm its high interest due to March 07 having a higher than average inflation that month....

Ash, I though the whole reason you skipped the country and requested Nazi Germany for asylum by claiming you were a political target of an elite underground far left movement, was to avoid paying your debt to Harry the Bastard for his 'recreation' funding during your 'study' periods.

I presume he has located you using a pseudonym then?
