a few people asked for info and graphs in the old thread so here they are. The 2 lines on the graphs are 2 different maps on the same car which is a Fabia VRS 2004 1.9 tdi-pd 130 bhp.

the blue line is a standard 'generic' remap file that I have as a base map when mapping these engines. It makes decent bhp (174) and relaitively low torque (250 ft/lb) this file is used as a clutch saving map, notice how it takes a while for the torque and bhp to build up and peak on both is much later on in the revs. by producing the power and torque higher up in the revs the clutch is less stressed at its weakest time, low revs with high load (throttle).

The red line is a map that was written to make the car feel a lot more punchy. BHP and torque is created a lot earlier in the rev range with an extra 38 ft/lb of torque and 20 bhp at 2800 rpm. For every day driving and motorway use this feels a lot better to drive, power is smoother and it doesnt feel like you need to rev it so hard. Under normal driving conditions its designed to be more economical due to the early torque delivery the throttle is used less and gear changes are earlier.

bhp graph:

torque graph:

Both maps need improvement to get the torque figures up a bit but both are very clutch/flywheel/transmission friendly and feel fantastic on the road. All depends what you want really, a drivable car with plenty of power that is smooth and reliable or chasing big power figures at the sacrifice of drivability and reliability.
