Taking a promotion at work, and finally been given a date so need to sort out a van. I can either take a company van (but beleive my tax will be affected) and obviously get diesel card and never worry about when i fill it up.

Second option is i buy a few year old astra van using the vehicle allowance and insure it (so 2500 for van and a grand insurance) and then use the 40p mileage allowance to pay for the diesel.

Either way i'm going to be in an astravan, just wondered what people's experiences of them are like ? 1.7 DTI any good ?

Secondly what would you do, take a company van ( 08 plate brand new), dont pay petrol but be stung in your pay each month for it. Or take the vehicle allowance over the year, buy your own and then run it on the diesel allowance.

And finally any other alternatives to an astra van ?

Or i could look at this http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/659111.htm

Surley you won't be taxed £300 per month for a company van. Will be about half that!

Get the new one

Xe'd van would be fun. And then the added benefit of my own van would be i could modify it, put some sounds in it, and of course abuse it at the weekends etc and tesco runs for beer

If you're only allowed to use the van for work use you won't be taxed??

I thought you meant you could use it all the time if you take the new one!

£3500 over 12 months works out to nearly £300 per month

Just worked it out assuming you'd pay over a year

1.7DTi engine would be ok, not great.

Obviously, you want as new as you can get, preferably the 1.7CDTi.

So for private use Will, how much do you think it would "cost" each month (i.e. Tax) including personal use ?

who gives a crap? I have a work car and I dont pay for insruance (going to be over a grand), tax (dunno what tax costs theses days), servicing, parts, tyres. I just pay fuel cause its purely a perk.

Gotta be cheaper to have the firm buy you a car??

True, you do need to factor in servicing costs etc.

Plus, when it breaks down, or you have an accident etc, you'll get a replacement quickly and won't be out of work etc. By running your own car, it's up to you.

Plus insurance will be more as you have to use it for Business use.

Oh yeah...

I'll just have a chat with one of the engineers and find out how much they pay for the van each month.
