Alrighty folks, I'm looking at changing my car and fancy getting my mits on an S3. I know there are 1 or 2 members who have them on here and was wondering if I could get a few facts.

What are they like on fuel, for both spirited driving and day to day driving?
How reliable they are, also what the servicing costs are?
Would it be a mistake to buy one of reasonably high mileage?
General experience of the car, does it have a comfortable driving position, how does the car perform to others in its class etc?

Thanks in advance

late 20's on a motorway run, early 20's round town, under 20 on a good blast.

Pretty reliable but they have there known faults like any car. Servicing is expensive, good few hundred and thats if nothings wrong with it, last once cost me £500 and mines pretty sound. Just had the clucth done on mine, just under 1K.

Would it be a mistake to buy one of reasonably high mileage?

I have driven a number of S3's including my dads 130k one, its by far the best one I have drove as its been very well looked after.

General experience of the car, does it have a comfortable driving position, how does the car perform to others in its class etc?

Comftable to drive, not that interesting tbh, suspension is pretty poor as standard but budget about 1200 to get it to handle well

servicing is ok if you dont go to Audi

Problems include

electrics, thermostats, ARB, rear suspension, indicator relays, early models will have problems with colis

Driving position for me is not that good. Ride is ok.

Pretty fast. Good remap sorts them out. Do not like to be drag started due to dual fly mass

Get haldex oil chnaged every service - oil is only £11
Filter done every 40K - filter is around £35

Heavy on tyres also

I have one, I like it. Not the most inspiring car to drive, but its a great place to be. Plenty of power available. I'm happy with mine.

Whats the mileage like on your cars? Would you say it was a bad idea to buy one with say 90k miles on?

Yeh, I was thinking that myself mate. I would expect an Audi, BMW or Merc to run forever to a certain extent.

Providing it's serviced regularly and been looked after then i dont see high mileage as a problem.
