If it's the car's original plate then I think it can be transferred to another car but you can't put it on retention. I'm not 100% but I seem to remember reading that an original plate has to be transferred onto another car before it can be put on retention. In which case, yes you can sell it but I think you'd need the buyer to send their documents to you, then you send them all off to the DVLA.

That may not be right but I think it is
