Mornin,

So I was driving back from the shithole (Tamworth) last night and I went round a bend (very light bend, doing about 40 accelerating from 30) and the wheels started to slide, went one way, then another and ended up at the side of the road in a load of soft mud with the entire drivers side caved in. I have a mate (who might be on these boards) that told me that due to the age of the car (R-reg/1997) and the fact its done 85k miles then its probably a write off.

This happened last night and now my car is down the road in some recovery place waiting for me to make a move but im unsure of what to do now. Iv got speakers in the car which im going to get out (not sure why...) but im going to get them anyway and then the cars mine after iv paid them for the collection and shit.

I was only TPFT on my insurance too... (I thought to myself on the last renewal; "I haven't crashed in 4 years, why bother paying for fully comp?") lol, just my luck.

Is it just a case of scrapping the thing now? I know its going to cost a lot regardless but im just wondering if there's a better route to take or if anyone had any advice on what to do next... I know somebody who (might) have a truck I can take it away on but im not too sure.

Anyone got any advice or anything? Im a bit all over the place at the minute, iv never been in this situation before.

Cheers for any help or anything!

Since your not covered fully comp only thing you can really do is get it to a garage who can give you a quote. If they say its a write off you can either sell it whole or break the thing.

What was the price difference between fully comp and tpft? All my quotes for tpft seem to be £10 MORE than FC!

seeing as you not fully comp then there no point paying out for repair, it will cost a lot, and that money could have been put towards a new car, but as for the car, try and get as much good parts off/out of the car, sell them wither on here or on ebay, this will give some few extra pennys, cancel your insurance or pause it but dont tell them, no point lossing ur NCB over it, ring around your local scrap yards, and the will collect your car and even give you cash for it

I'm only TPFT and since there was no third party, fire or theft im guessing I don't need to tell them, im not making a claim after all... because I can't.

As for salvaging bits from the car. Its a pretty much bog standard Corsa, 1.2 8v to be honest its not got anything on it anyone would want, lights are all good, GSI steering wheel somebody might want, boot is still good, bonnet is still good but nobody lives near me to collect.

Can't believe it, I cant believe I wrote my car off over something so small, I wasn't speeding, totally clean of booze, the wheels just went. The copper told me that if it rains after a hot day the roads tend to be slippier.

Never mind, it's done. I don't think there's anything worth stripping from the car to be honest, it's totally standard. I wouldn't know how to take half of it off anyway.

Will I have to pay for it to be scrapped?

no where i live there 'gagging' for scrap, depends if they collect or you take the car to them, if they collect could only get £50-£100 btu take the car to them may be a bit more, my got £300 for his escort when the gearbox went

Does anyone have any reccomendations for a new car? Looking for something a bit bigger than a corsa really, low insurance group, around 3k.

I like the look of those Seat Leon/Ibiza, anyone got any opinions on these?

Any other cars I could look at?

Tamworths actally alright, I think i might have jumped the gun with the shithole remark!

I work there and Im getting to know the Town a bit more, its alright.

There must be a fucking CHAV MAKING MACHINE there pumping out chavs at a shocking rate somewhere though.

Im looking at a Seat Ibiza and a Clio, anything immediately wrong with these?

Mike, that is the worse advice I've ever read. For one there is record of it having been recovered. For two, they'll pay out book value of a 1998 1.2 car which is about £500, I would imagine the excess will eat most of that and the loss of bonus will have the rest.

If you have the facility to strip, do that and make back what you can. Ideally you would take the parts off and sell those and take the metal to a metal dealer not a vehicle dismantler. They generally pay more than a vehicle breaker.

If you don't have the facility to strip you can either pay to release the car and organise your own disposal of the entire car to a vehicle dismantler.

You may also want to enquire about the recovery company take the car in lieu of recovery charges. It's worth £150-ish to them as metal but of course they're not really obligated to do this and may want the cash. Depends if they want the messing or ready money.
