That trek one looks smart and isnt too badly priced.

If there is a cycle king near you then they do really good bikes. My dad gets his racing bike stuff from there and my cousin just brought a moutain bike for a really reasonable price

I wouldn't just go buying a bike because it's expensive. At that price you have to know what you want as there is a lot of choice, but you are still in a price range where compromises will be putting on parts that will fail on you at annoying times - stuff like the cranks, pedals and wheels. Saying that they should all be ok to last a while, and luckily you ought to be clear of those pointless cable operated disk brakes.

I'd recomend a Kona Cinder Cone, it's a bit cheaper than what you want to spend. But they are a great bike. With the money saved you can then upgrade the cranks, pedals and maybe even the wheels if you aren't happy with them - but in my experence the Kona's come with decent wheels that can take a load of abuse for a while. Comes with Hayes hydraulic disks which do the job just fine - Hope Technology ones are better, but you'll have a job finding them as standard fit on most bikes. Oh, also comes in a 22" frame which ought to fit you just about right...
