On holiday in Portugal last week, I noticed that there are an awful lot of 3/5 door hatchback cars (of all ages, and cars with windows, rather than car based vans) that have had a mesh guard fitted behind the front seats, then a full length parcel shelf from the front seats to the boot. We thought that it might have been for transporting animals, but the fact that the parcel shelf is there kind of goes against that idea.

Is there any reason for this?
