Whats the best way to do it in peoples opinions? I want to learn a bit of french, obviously would take years to be fluent, but want to learn some basics as im going to Paris this new years with gfs family so i want to know some as they know quite a bit, i can then surprise them!

Is it better to read books or get those audio tapes?

Books are utter crap imo. If you don't need to read/write the language i'd just use the internet. Pretty sure there is website with audio files you can listen to etc..

Wouldn't be too worried about writing it but reading a little bit could be helpful, i'll look into getting a beginner book and an audio tape or something, BBC site has some good stuff on it

Hire a couple of french guys to come over and do a crash course on it, but don't knife and burn them afterwards, your carpets will suffer. :\
