Right, After a new car and taken a fancy to a MK2/3 Golf GTi

I'm ideally after one that has the euro look too it, lowered bbs wheels etc. I'm not too fussed on color as long as it is reasonably mint and doesn't have space miles on it.

Any finds would be great

Get a mark 2,look ten times better than a mk3 imo.

They have a better stance on the road if you get me.

Look on edition 38 theres a few decent ones on there

tbh i wouldnt worry about milage,i have had a 5 door gti few years now and its on 180k and still runs mint.

Looks decent,not overly keen on the smooth boot or the back splitter or the sterring wheel, apart from that its a minter.

Its an 8v mind.id prefer the 16v.

the book and steering wheel would soon be replaced by stock items, and the wheels would be swapped as well.

I think it looks reasonably tidy though for its age.

im in the same position mate, im looking for one for my misses, she really wants a mk2 but iv told her she can only have a mk3 becasue im the one thats gonna be fixing it and getting parts lol

Iv been looking at 8v and 16v mk3's in black or white. Is there a big differnece between the two.

Not really no. Infact if you put them on a 1/4 mile they make pretty much the same time.

Also superlight i mentioned tdi's to her (as your post last week) but she said it has to have gti on the back

The 8v has more torque than the 16v, hence it's a little more practical around town and has better initial pull. However, the 16v has significantly more power, and will rapidly catch and pass an 8v. The 16v has slightly uprated brakes and suspension, and sits slightly lower, giving a more sporty ride. I'd suggest the 8v is more practical, but the 16v is better for the racers.

I'd have an 8v with a big vavle PB head, cam and remap. That would see nearly 150bhp

To be fair, a mk3 TDI with a remap isn't much slower than an 8v GTI

Wrong! (If your talking about the mk3)

My Mk3 GTi 8v has the same brake set up as the VR from the factory (288mm) which is the same as the 16v and VR.

Springs are different spec (to cope with different weights) but all run macpherson damping systems.

I own an Mk3 GTi 8v, around town not much in it between that and a 16v, on the dual however the 16v will pull away at higher end speed, but the 8v will still pull near on 40mpg (I have even seen 43mpg on a run - driving carefully of course!)

The 8v isnt quick, but its not slow either, it just had the GTi ethos if you like.

Back to the original point of the thread,

£2k will buy you a tidy mk2 8v/16v, or a tidy mk3 8v/16v.

I love the mk2 I have to say, but remember late mk3's (On P and R plates, which will be within budget) have galvanised bodies, so dont really rot.

I do love my Mk3 though. Defo a Mk3 (and general VAG) lover

Mk2 any day of the week, Mk3's are utter shite comapred to them..

For 2k you should get a semi decent one.. Go for an 8v if you want reliability, I've had both and actually prefer 8v's over 16v's..
