Whoops Think I've upset it at PVS. tits...

Anyhow. It was getting hot when coming back from PV. Drove it carefully for the first 80 miles until I managed to fill up at Shell.

Came straight out of the garage and gave it some shit to try and catch up, after 10 miles noticed the tempo gauge rising. Kept my eye on it and the harder I drove it the hotter it got. Not so good.

It's been off the road since PV. Gave the engine a good strip down and examined the loom. Repaired several bits and pieces and spent an age putting it back together all nicely.

Problem started when I put the coolant back in it, the car was getting hot, but didn't seem to be circulating the coolant very well. It won't build up pressure in the rad. At one point I left it to boil over and it got very very hot in the expansion tank.

EML is on and it misfires on half throttle. Put your foot down and it will pick up fine...

Thoughts?

left hand matrix pipe to the left one on the main large pipe that runs along the block, right hand matrix pipe to the end of the head, header tank to the right one on the main pipe that runs along the block iirc.a mate had the same sort of problem with his xe and it turned out the pipes were the wrong way round.

That's the prob then. Mine goes straight over from right bulkhead to right plastic tube. Then left tube to header tank etc.

Think we had a prob with it fouling on the inlet manifold. Will get on it tomoro. See what happens hehe.

Following on from my thread about the XE I have just fitted in my Nova overheating. I have just fitted a brand new thermostat and ran the car with the lid off to bleed the system for a bit.

The coolant system all got warm apart from the header tank yet it still started spewing out of the tank. Once this calmed down I let it run a little longer and the header tank warmed up (maybe air lock caused it to overflow). I refitted the lid and the water pipes to the radiator then got really hard.

The temperature gauge reads half or just over yet every other XE Nova I have had has ran on 1/4 on the gauge.

Did a compression test but that showed 200psi on all 4 cylinders. No oil under oil cap but seem to be getting lots of pressure build up. Got smoke from the exhaust but could be condensation as its been cold today.

Head gasket maybe?

Does look that way fella. Hopefully the compression test will confirm.

I did a compression test on mine before i replaced the HG. I didnt get an extreme drop on compression like most said i would. But the HG had definately goosed.

Can't see it being the HG if it's not using any water.

I'd check this in order:

Flush coolant system (including removing rad and flushing seperately)
Check all Water pipes for blockages/fitment
Replace thermostat
Replace Water Pump

when my head gasket went i had all the above youve mentioned. my rad pipes went rock hard, constant pressure build up. My mate thought it was just an air lock in the system, but the i ketp losing coolant, got smoke from my exhaust, i also said its probberly condensation because it was a cold day, but it done it on hot days aswell. im no mechanic, but im only saying your head gasket might have gone is because the symptoms are the excat same as mine. hope this helps you out abit mate

Don't think he has yet. Not with me anyway...

TBH your comment about water loss is not so true. My HG failed a few weeks back and I had no water loss.

I was slightly down on compression on one piston, but not massively.

Not true?

I said "I can't see it being HG if its not loosing water"

I didn't say it won't be the HG if it's not loosing water
