right, after this wont post anymore about planes
just found this vid, and tbh dont expect anyone to find it too intresting, but hey.........
TSR-2 - 20 years ahead of its time, only for the gov to cancel it, and then, destroy everything to do with it , whitin days/weeks of deciding to buy the american built F111
to give you an idea, this had alot of sytems the tornado had when it was launched, some 20 years later
UK could have had the most advanced aircraft in the world, and stopped because of cost

Its like what Clarkson says when he drives the Noble - this country has the potential and the talent to build great things but we just dont (noble not included obv)

It's amazing how we used to own 3/4 of the world, our citizens and armies fighting and dying for it, only for a bunch of guys in suits to decide it's not politically correct to have an empire and just give everything back. Then they hold us back from ever increasing our power by halting programs like the TSR-2.
Now the biggest superpower is one of our own little offshoots. I think a major reason that we dislike America so much (despite its leader) is that they are who we want to be in terms of world leadership, whilst we drown under a sea of bureaucracy. It truly is a mad world.
I was reading one of Clarkson's books recently, he said that we invented Scramjet technology, did successful runs and then aborted the projects as it was unfeasible as a mode of transport, but that didn't stop the Americans claiming they did it first

Stuff like this fascinates me, there's so much we've half done and given up on which has then been managed by other people a long time after.
If we'd kept the funding in a lot of them, we'd be a lot better off for it now.
There was a lot of utter shit that we tried too though

The Virgin Pendolino being another example.
We invented tilting trains, but sold the technology to Italy as it was too expensive.
Then we went and bought it back off them
Fucking stupid.

that was chosen over the tsr2, which was then dropped in favour of the phantoms and the blackburn bucaneer (sp)
2 planes to do the job the tsr2 could have done

yes, instead spend twice as much on an american design, which was shit, and still never make it, and then revert back to 2 seperate designs to do the job of 1 aircraft
this would have been a massive step forwards for the UK aircraft industry, but instead was proberly the begining of the end
