James May and Richard Hammond could leave Top Gear after failing to agree contract terms, according to a report.
The pair, whose contracts expire at the end of the month, are said to want pay deals more in line with co-host Jeremy Clarkson, which the BBC may not be prepared to meet.
"Internally there is talk that there might be a chance for the first time that there could be a break up of the team, it has got that bad," MediaGuardian quotes a source as saying.
"There has been a lot of pulling out of hair, a Mexican stand-off. For the first time it is possible that one or both might leave."
The source added: "They don't want to accept second status any more. There has been a meltdown in negotiations."
Why don't they just pay them all the same? Would'nt be the same without all 3.

They said they wanted to go out on a high, that would be just as good an excuse as any for that.

Also think its funny how the BBC can't pay them a bit more but they can over spend on their website by £50M or somethng similar.

It would be an easy solution to the persistant complaints of the viewing minority morons.
I'm not convinced the BBC would fight for them...

The thing is, and i'm saying this as someone who feels slightly bored (for the first time ever) with top gear... Can you imagine top gear without Clarkson? Now picture it without the other two, which would be more wrong?

Think it would be bad if any left as the banter makes good tv, one of the only shows I watch on bbc anymore.

No great loss. It's getting predictable anyway. They're all so typecast that you can tell that when Jeremy introduces a news article, Richard will reply with something that makes him look dumb and James will complain that it's too fast or modern.
Fresh people would mean fresh humour. I remember enjoying Steve Coogan driving a Ferrari 575 and I'm sure there have been others. Some of the guests - those who aren't there to promote a book - do appear to have an interest in cars as well. Surely this is the only prerequisite in the current format. May has in the past discussed technical things in the vintage cars episode before being told to shut up. So if that is not what is required, so be it. I would happily watch him in other series. The Big Wine Adventure was good TV.
Not sure where Hammond would end up. Good Morning probably. Suit me, I'm never at home during the day.

TBH tho theres nothing better than this on a sunday evening, and i do think it would be a big lose. I dont wont fith gear to take over with the ratings ect. there adventures ect are classic, and they do make u laff.

Does need a fresh lick of paint. I liked what they did with James May too, plucking him out of obscurity. Not like what 5th Gear did with that cunt Tim Lovejoy.

Mays wine programme was good. As was his 70's-80's toys series too.

I dont think they use James May enough, like Ian said his input on the vintage car feature was brilliant, it would be nice for him to go into more technical areas, leave Clarkson to do the racing and coming up with the challenges. Could probably lose Hammond tbh, hes an alright bloke, but I think they might keep him due to getting females into watching TG

May and Hammond are dispensable, Clarkson is a crucial aspect of that show and a large proportion of their viewers would disappear if he wasn't on it.....hence the pay difference
Think they're being a bit stupid tbh that job is amazing enough as it is without worrying about how much they are getting paid, and not as if there isn't a queue of people wanting to take their place

don't get me wrong i wouldn't miss it but its not got the wow factor anymore
take the RS6 shootout vs those 2 blokes didn't really feel on the edge of your seat stuff as hammond tried to make out

rs6 shootout with two blokes doing some dangerous stuff on a mountain,
rs4 shootout with two blokes doing some dangerous stuff on a mountain
good programme but really does need to stop being so damn repetitive

I prefered the old top gear when the majority of cars on test were what people could actually afford and may consider buying.
Ok its nice to see these great fast cars do awesome things and go to nice places but its not about reviewing cars for mr average anymore.
I like May's in-depth history about cars that he goes into, makes a break from the past few years. BUT the other 2 just tell him to shut it. OK its part of the show, it adds humour etc.
So therefore i would like to see topgear head back to something a little more down to earth and not be a show for millionaires and crazy stunts. Its got boring

Wouldn't be a great loss as Topgear is Clarkson tbh.
A few new faces could be whats needed.
They should paoch Tiff and VBH from 5th gear.

Unless it's Clarkson against May/Hammond, has the car ever won one of those challenges?
RS6 vs blokes, car lost
RS4 vs blokes, car lost
Fiat 500 vs blokes, car lost
Peugeot 206 (?) vs blokes, car lost
Bugatti vs Eurofighter, car lost
I honestly can't remember the car winning, except the AM Vantage against the guy on skates.
Have come to expect the car to lose now.

Wouldnt bother me if they went, Clarkson makes it funny to watch....not a boring car show like 5th gear. Maybe get that German burd & some ex race driver aswell for more serious stuff.

I'd rather they ditched the Stuntman and paid for Sabine really.
