1) If it's a pretty normal car, probably just being a bit ghetto.
2) If it's a high powered 'dragster' type car with bigger wheels, tyres etc, it will be for grip.

Lotus Elise S1 had 15s on the front and 16s on the back iirc

Guess it helps get the power down and keep the tail in place...whereby the fronts can be smaller for better steering/turn in etc

on japanese cars its usually drift drivers that have different rears because those wheels have slick tyres ideal for drifing..

How about the theory that......

You have some massive sweet rims on your ride, you get a puncture stick your spare on.

Then you cant be arsed to get it repaird so stick the cars original alloys on the front so its safer to drive.

When I was refurbing wheels on my Corsa I could only do 2 at a time as the steelies wouldn't fit over my 2l front brakes.

Drifted quite well with 135 tyres on the rear and 195's on the front

My theory is this;

You've bought some new rims, the old rims still have good tread on 2 tyres, instead of swapping the tyres over, put 2 old alloys on front, 2 new alloys on rear, then rag the fuck out of the front ones (presuming its front wheel drive) until tyres are fucked!
