Part 1: Emissions.
The first digit of the code relates to the emissions legislation. Current petrol cars need to meet Euro 4 regs.
Euro 4= Z
Euro 3= Y
Euro 2= X
Euro 1= C

Part 2 = Capacity
The next two digits are numbers and they describe the engine capacity. Eg 1.6 litre will be 16. 2.0 litre will be 20

Part 3= Compression Next comes the compression ratio:
G= 8 to 8.5:1
L= 8.5 to 9:1
N= 9 to 9.5:1
S= 9.5 to 10:1
X= 10 to 11.5:1
Y= 11.5+:1

Part 4= Fuelling
This didgit refers to they type of fuel system:
D= Diesel
E= Multi-point injection
V= Carburettor
Z= Single point injection

Part 5= Extras
Some engines have an extra digit explaining how they are different to the normal engines.
B= IBC
C= Corporation ignition system
F= Vehicles for authorities
H= High output/ Supercharged
I= Irmscher
J= Throttled output
K= Komplex
L= Low output/Supercharged
P= Power adapted
R= Increased output
T= Turbo
U= Uruguay
V= Volum model
W= Venezuela
2= Family II Engine

Example: Z20LET

Z- Euro 4 emissions
20- 2.0 litre
L- 8.5 to 9:1 compression ratio
E- Multi-Point Injection
T- Turbo
Hope this helps
