They won't because your average family man won't be able to afford to run them.

Isn't a Golf Mk1 still quicker than the current Mk5?
Certainly quicker than a Mk4 I'm sure and that design is what, 30 years old?

Pretty confident the MK1 is faster as it's older it's lighter (as some how the more modern a car the heavier:boggle
And top gear have proved it.......

I know what you're saying Jas, 15 years ago a car which could do 150mph was very impressive, that would have been a manufacturer's top of the range sporting model with a big wing on the back, now a boring 5 door hatchback will do those speeds.
I don't think things are going to get slower, I just think they'll get 'different', more fast diesels, more efficient fast cars, that sort of thing, I can't see Audi, BMW and Mercedes admitting defeat (to eachother if anything)

There's no way that a Mk5 Golf GTi would be beaten by a Mk1 in a straight line if that's what you're saying.

Pfft I cant see the whole mk1 or mk2 being quicker than a new golf gti
2.0fsi gti comes in 4motion and has approx 200bhp and tooo much torque..
Robin that exactly what I mean..
Speaking to My uncle about his cars when he was younger..
He had an rs1800
fair enough loved by many these days, but that was the rs/st focus of those days

The new golf GTi 2.0 turbo is 6.9sec to 60mph, i'm sure the mk2 1.8 16v GTi is faster...

No chance Scott. They are quick buggers, but not faster than a 106 GTi (shock horror).

Agreed, everything in the future is going to be low speed, low emissions, low cost + high mpg and good reliability

Wrong - GTi's are FWD only.
