Anyone know if there's anywhere online I can look up the average salary for a Trainee Surveyor in Scotland?

Yep, there is a website which people type in thier wages and takes a record. You can then compare your data with the data on the site, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it...

I'm getting a salary review tomorrow

Problem is, I started with the company a year ago as a Trainee Administrator. A few months ago I was told I would be trained up on either Quantity Surveying or Buying - I had to decide what one.

I've decided on QS (still waiting on being told when the training will officially start) Over the past few months I have been helping with the buying. In a couple of weeks the MD & Buyer are both off on holiday at the same time, and I've been told I'll be doing the buying on my own while they're away.

There's been no mention of a salary increase for the extra work I've been doing (still getting paid the shitty wage as Trainee Administrator)

I kinda hinted last week that I wasn't happy, and today I was told I will get my salary review tomorrow Thing is I don't know if its a review of my salary as Administrator, Trainee Surveyor or Trainee Buyer or a combination of them all

I'm dreading it

Just point out the extra work you have been doing, have evidence if possible or atleast specific instances you can point to. And also point out how you have been told you will be doing all the buying in a few weeks time on your own.

If they dont offer you a rise to where you are expecting then make it known what you were looking for from the research you have done. And be prepared to say you'll look elsewhere if they offer you something really pityful.

I love it, only been doing it for 4 months but got sick of the IT industry so thought I'd try something different.

Definately made the right decision! A lot of freedom to manage your own time!

Did you have any qualifications in Quantity Surveying before you started?

Yeah its never easy to speak out, but if you go in prepared with examples of times you've gone above and beyond your current duties then they dont have much comeback.

As you say though, view it as make or break time and just go for it.

Only problem I see is thats for someone with a qualification in surveying, while you'll be starting from scratch & hopefully them putting you through college etc.

Id print off some adverts for admin jobs in the area, tell them you expect a competitive rate to keep you.

Dont be scared to talk money....these guys havnt became company directors by sticking their head in the sand. They would probably think more of you if you just come right out with it.

My printers goosed

I looked it up on that other site - starting salary for a Trainee QS with no qualifications in the Edinburgh area - around £12000

Not a sausage! Got the job through somebody In the industry that I knew. Now working for Tarmac in highways construction and maintenance in Leicestershire.

I'm going back to uni in October to do a part-time degree in Quantity Surveying and Commercial Construction Management...... another 5 years of education!!

Salary wise, judging from the above figures I'm a bit above the average (but that was down to the person that got me the job )

Don't hold back in what you ask for, if you don't ask you don't get and it will show your ambition that you value yourself more than they are currently offering!

deano, I'm neither fat nor middle aged but I know what you're talking about!
