...Was about a guy with (I think) a BMW, who bought carbon fibre sheets, applied them to his interior parts with a layer of surfboard lacquer from eBay. Looked pretty good, just can't find it.

I don't remember the thread. BUT, I do know that you can bond carbon fibre onto plastic components and then wax it with surf board wax to bring it up to a decent finish.

Don't know why you would use surf wax. I actually don't really know anything about surf wax... But the way I have seen it done is the carbon gets boneded down to the surface using epoxy resin in the same way you would do to lay it up. Then you can spray it with a poly urethane based paint/laquer which is really thick and will build up a nice thick layer. It needs to be poished afterwards a bit but that seems to work quite well.
