Out of interest, and to settle a little argument with someone, roughly how much does it cost to leave a PC turned on for 24 hours? I'm thinking it would be a matter of pence...

Well I got this email off my cousin this morning, and am almost ready to explode! I left the PC on as it was running a de-frag and knowing what the silly cow is like, I'll bet she's gone and pulled the plug on it;

"You left your computer and internet on this morning so i'm assuming that it was on all night..... Can you make sure that when you go out its turned off cos its not fair on my mum having to foot the electricity bill for it.

Don't mean to grumble but we've all got to be a bit more considerate seeing as we pay a lot less rent than most people."

Not a lot, i have a server running 24/7

Could depend on the power of the PSU though...if its a monster 1000w one then its going to sap a bit more power.

It pisses me off though that they make such a fuss about how much electric I'm using (I work nights, so am often at home during the day - "using the electric when it cost's more")... I've not got a problem paying more if needed, but I'm forever going round turning lights off and TV's off after them!

found this on a site give a rough indication of cost, its obviously pc and leccy rate dependant.

quote:

I have an energy meter and tested this out -

Computer is Athlon 2100XP with a 300 Watt PSU.

On average the power consumption was 200W per hour without the monitor switched on, 300 W per hour with the monitor on.

Over 24 hours thats about 7.2 Kwh, my electric costs something in the region of 9p per kwh so thats a cost of about 65p.

Over a month that would be £19.50 onto you electric bill,
£58.50 a quarter and £234 a year

Wouldn't mind aswell, but I'm paying the same as my cousin and her fella are for rent etc... but as I work for Sky, we've got the full Sky package plus multiroom (Sky+ in 3 rooms, and Sky digi box that my aunty took to Portugal for her apartment!!) - that lot is worth about £80/month

pretty easy to work out.
Look at your leccy bill and find out how much you pay per kw. going to be something like 12p/15p.

Then look at what size PSU your PC uses, mine is 500w.

500W x 2 = 1kw

24hours @ 15p = £1.80

and it costs more to keep re-starting your computer/monitor/printer etc

i fucking hate people like that, who think the way to save the world is to turn everything off untill you need it - no retard that just uses MORE electricity and kills polar bears quicker, stop listening to every piece of drivvle the government comes out with

suppose the more eco warriors the country has the less chance that real issues will get noticed/dealt with

What a load of drizzle. If you computer is on for 6 hours a day and not 24, then you are using less energy. I hardly ever leave my laptop/pc on, waste of energy

I understand what you're saying about respect etc.. but I'm already saving her £80 a month on her TV subscriptions (and yes, she did already pay for it before I moved in, so it IS a saving for her). I only pay a small amount for monthly rent, but it's what SHE asked for, I have offered more, but she said it's ok (and its the same as my cousin pays).

It's not my aunty that's moaning about it, its my whinging cousin sticking her snout in.

but then when you start it back up it uses more power than leaving it idling all day

The amount a pc uses on startup in minimal, probably 4p worth, which if was on and running, would be the equivelent of 20mins.

Even at a silly scenario as when you turn it on its 20p, that'd still be an hour and 25 mins or so.

Therefore, if you arent going to use your pc for an hour and 26 minutes, it'd be cheaper and more economical to turn it off and back on again.

my mum asked if she could turn the pc off at the plug because the network light flashing and lights on the router were costing electricity

she nearly saw the back of my hand
