let me get this straight
CB radio as previously mentioned stands for citizen band radio.
on a standard 40 channel radio (*80 channel radio) in this day and age, you will recieve:
1) lorry and long distance haulage drivers in transit
2) agricultural machinery, tractors and combine harvesters working in the field.
3) the possibility of taxi drivers, but they no longer use CB radio systems.
4) NOT the emergency services, my dad is a police officer
(IIRC nottinghamshire police were the last to convert from analogue to digital signal).
5*) european transmission. i have had clear transmissions to eastern germany and serbia in my car, with high atmospherics.
6) local inbreds/ lorry yard prostitutes and retro enthusiasts that refuse to buy mobile phones.
questions appreciated, hope this helps

Ive got one in my taxi (Private Hire) If I turn the set off but leave the CB on I can use it as a normal CB, ive got an ariel thats roughly the same size as a normal car one which cost me £18 and it works the exact same as the big massive things ive gone 30 miles and still picked up the taxi base with it, as above, you cant pick up the police on them anymore.

i had one on my car for a while. i had a the box hanging from underneath the glove box and had a power supply from the cigarette lighter and dan the antena cable through to the boot, out the top and had a magnetic mount on the roof. then a 7 foot areal. mine could pick up about 25 miles away on a good day. good laugh when in convoys.

i have done it before, but it has seriously bad influences on the radio SWR (standing wave ratio).
basically, poor range performance and potentially damaging for the radio.
try it though, i did- just make sure the radio doesn;t get hot to the touch.

yes you can, you turn the knob until it say's police band
I'm with Cosmo. You can't listen to Police radio with a CB radio. You could a few years ago, when it was all UHF/VHF, but now they use a secure Airwaves system, which is encrypted and radios normally have to be manually added to the system to allow them to be used. However, I do have a method of listening to any of the various Police channels (over 150 or so for South Wales alone!) and can listen to the radio in my van
Anyway. We had handheld radios at Weston Wheels a few years back. We kept on saying that there were random fights, just to watch the security guards running everywhere.

You never could listen to Police on a CB.
CB is 27Mhz. Police were up in VHF somewhere, 155Mhz something.
You would need a scanner capable of doing those frequencies. Which do exist, but they're not strictly CB as such.
Plus nowadays they're all up UHF somewhere and it's not modulated audio, you need handshake capability and a little more processing power than a CB radio can offer you

The Airwaves system is based on the TETRA system. Bit different to normal radio, but wikipedia has some information for those that care.

So, would you get 3 points for talking on a CB radio whilst driving?

Why do you want a stupid big aerial on your car?

I thought that, joe. He's only interested in a big daft aerial really. The CB is an after thought Seems very strange and it's only him that'll appreciate it in reality...bit like LED washer jets or playboy stickers.

ingenious idea actually, especially with a thin antenna.
may have some complications with the amount of standing water in there perhaps.
may have trouble recieving transmissions too, but very little.

Of course a shorter aerial will work - not as effectively but you don't need a full wave, if that were the case your FM antenna would be about 3 metres long. Obviously those wouldn't be popular.
