i gonna have to say i think its a good idea.... i quite like the idea of being able to sit back and do what the hell i like while the drivings done for me.. If i want to take a drive i would go to a track....
as for stuff breaking, its all down to cost.. you will find that stuff that is generally more important on todays cars doesnt break nearly as often as the other crap around it.. and the more important suff tends to be more expensive as its manufactured to higher standards.. the technology is there to make stuff ultra reliable its just people wont pay the premium for it.. it makes you think.. how fecking expensive would a driverless car be.. and i hope to god it has decent satnav

It wont happen.
This country cant handle baggage at an airport terminal nevermind program every single road into every one of these new cars, Too much work for something that isnt going to work in many ways.
Think about the last 30 years, cars havent come THAT far really, yes they have progressed but not by a 'spaceage' ammount.
Didnt they say in 1999 that by 2012 we will have hover-cars? 5 years to go and Ford are still building the KA.
I'll worry about it when and if it happens.

Fair point there, mate.
I remember on Top Gear once they had that self-driving BMW on, they drove it round the track then it took Jeremy round and he didn't know how to make it stop
It would be nice just sitting in the back and not having to worry about what's going on in the front end, but just so long as these cars don't look like they do in that pic.
Plus with the price of the things when they come out, so many people won't be able to drive at all until the price comes down or they save the money, which they won't be able to do because it'll be illegal to drive so they can't get to work.

I seriously beg to differ..
the late 70's most cars were still using carbs, pushrods and vacuum advance ignition.. the grand total of electronic control units was zero..
A volkswagen golf comming of the production line today has around 50 - 60 electronic 'control units' all of which talk to each other via a controlled area network. As for the actual materials used they have come on a great deal also...

Thats in 30 years they have done that, Thats a far far cry from a car driving itself on its own without any help atall.

And that report suggests it would be possible in another 30.. the technology is already there..
Fly by wire acceleration
Fly by wire steering
Fly by wire brakes ( i think some mercs are using it)
Ultrasonic sensors used for parking and lane change warning
The new VW Touran parks itself for ffs using ultrasonic sensors!!
And satnav is widely used..
Wire it all together with a few control units and software and away you go ( i make it sound so simple but it really isnt!!)
In the US they even have competitons with driverless cars across the desert and across makeshift citys..
