Got my pay review letter today.
Now, I don't think the rise that I'm getting is too bad (9% increase), but I was hoping for a bit more
I was also expecting a review to discuss it rather than just a letter

I've not had a review/increase before....only been in this job a year, and my last one was a two year traineeship with fixed salaries for both years, and before that I've only done temping/uni jobs etc

Is that a decent increase?

I'm just thinking that I'll be pissed later if I don't at least try for more, and also I know that if I was to move somewhere else I would be able to get more....but I really like where I am

Also, I was told that our bonus letters are coming out next week, so if I do ask, should I wait until after that incase they change what I'm due to get?!

Arghghg....I need to grow some balls

When I had my 1st review they didn't offer as much as I wanted so I just came out with it and told them how much I want. They then had a chat and came back with rise I was after.

As long as you aren't taking the piss its worth taking a chance!

It's usually sort of 2-3%, isn't it? So 9% is alright, unless you've taken up a better/more advanced role

I'd probably wait until after the bonus tbh, if you go in and ask for a bigger rise now they'll probably knock more off the bonus to compensate and you'll be none the wiser.

I don't know....I don't really know what is normal

The only rise that I have first hand experience of is Adam's last year, which was about 17%!

I only want a couple of k more....which is still less than I could potentially get from other firms

How often do you get your pay reviews Anually or Bi-Annually? How long have you been qualified? Do you think you are worth more than you current revised salary? To be honest an annual rise of 9% sound about right to me

17% is massive, 9% is pretty fantastic in the current climate imo.

As a company we all get an inflation based pay rise every April. All of the full time staff [on Salary not hourly] get a job/wage review yearly on top of the inflation increase. Last year I got a 47% pay rise but that was linked to the end of my probationary period. This year I got 8% [on top of the 2.5% we got a few weeks earlier]

remember we're broaching economically uncertain times so everyone may be startng to watch the pennies a bit more; I was expecting 10% this year, I'm happy with 8% though considering the current climate

I would hope not

A girl that I used to work with left at the start of the year....moved to another firm and is on £3k more than what I would be getting with my increase

Our boss offered her more money to stay

After she left, he told me that he has much more confidence in me and feels confident leaving me in charge of the dept and helping the trainee when he's on holiday etc

So the praise has been there....

I just don't know how to raise the subject

Why not just look around for other jobs in your area and see what comes up

I don't want to move, and can't be assed looking for a job that I don't particularly want just to prove to my work that they should pay me more

they just should

I think I will...I'll be annoyed if I don't and for a year think that I could potentially be on more

Ok, the other dilemma....ask now, or wait til after bonus letters

If I ask now, they might change my bonus

My boss' wife is pregnant and due to drop any day (actually, he isn't back from lunch yet, so she could potentially be squeezing one out just now), so if I wait, he could be off on paternity leave by next week which means I would have to leave it for a couple of weeks

Or, he might come in, be so happy about being a new daddy, that he'll give me even more

Work in the construction industry and incoming work is drying up fast

I would go for it now regardless of bonus letters coming next week or not.

No point sitting on it and wondering, just get it out in the open then you know where you stand. It sounds like the opportunity is there if they have expressed their confidence in you they will want to hang on to you
