As some of you may remember I hit my face on a solid object a few weeks back. It was in the middle of my exams and so I've only just seen a dentist now. Basically he's saying I'm gonna need braces to get them straight again.

Anyone here had braces before and what were your experiences of it? Did it hurt? How long did it take? Did it work etc?

To make matters worse coming home last night my clutch died on the m4 think it's the thrust bearing but yet more money!

I had braces on my bottom teeth. Didn't hurt when getting them fitted, but can be a bit painfull for a day or two when they tighten them. Had them in for over 2 years, but the difference to my teeth is amazing Well worth it!!

Yeah i had Braces for yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaars.

They can hurt when first put on and when they are consequently adjusted and you may get your mouth caught every now and again for a while. But you do get use to them.

Honestly mate it doesnt take that long. It took mine ages because i had teeth removed for them, and then i kept breaking them and missing appointments etc. so it was all down to myself really.

They should be able to give you a rough time frame when you go for a consultation.

I was the same. I had just started seeing Colin and he just about had a fit when I told him I was getting a brace However, you couldn't really see it cos it was my bottom teeth and as I said before, it was well worth it

You can buy 'wee thingy's' (dont know what they're called) at the orthodonitsts, that get into all the bits

Honestly its not as bad as you think, I put it off for years, wish I had done it sooner.

On saying that, I should have got my top teeth done as well, but point blankley refused as I knew a top brace would have been really visable

Inbetween with these

and the other is a normal toothbrush but with the middle section shorter than the outer section to allow for the brace.

I had extensive dental treatment. In total it took about 5 years to sort my teeth out, 3 of which I wore braces. They didn't hurt, but when they were tightened they'd ache for a bit. It's very much worthwhile IMO.

How old were you nath? did it impact on your life at all when you had them?

What's the typical cost for all this?

I was told it costs around £2k. Depends how long you have them.

Started when I was 13, and I had them taken out a few weeks after my 18th.

It really didn't have much impact in my life. It limited what I could eat, like you wouldnt be able to eat toffee's or liquorisch (sp). Even when I was 18 and had them I'd go out on weekends and not have any bother, even though I was pretty much the only legal person with them on.

They were free as the treatment started when I was 13.

For the end result they are 100% worth it. I got a bit careless with the aftercare and wouldn't wear the retainer as much as I should, as a result a couple of my teeth have gone a bit crooked, but nothing like they were before I had braces.

why did it take 5 years? seems ages? is it because you were growing? what was up with your teeth in the first place?

What about something like.... a chicken burger, those stringy bits of chicken get stuck between my teeth normally, would that get wrapped up in the braces?

I don't eat toffee or liquorish anyway so no loss there

If I get them I'm going to wait till after I've gone travelling and hopefully go for the 'clear / teeth coloured' ones rather than the metal look.

Ironically the dentist today had braces on

My teeth were a fucking mess basically

I had the 'fangs' and over crowding. I had to have a total of 7 teeth removed over the 5 years, 3 came out in one sitting

I guess as I was still growing they found in harder to predict what would happen. I doubt yours would take anywhere near 5 years.

I ate as I did before, but just cut out the sticky sweets and drank less fizzy drinks.

Anything that gets stuck in the braces can be removed with a good scrub with a tooth brush.

I knocked my teeth out in an industrial accident, I had to wear a brace for a few months. Was quite uncomfortable and eating was a pain but had to put up with it!
