Ok finally got one of my corsas sold and my insurance paid off, so i have now started saving for a 2.0 16v conversion for my corsa. Should have the right sort of money arounf august time. Ive got a quote already at £1250 for the whole lot (brakes, strethening, everything), but have heard he can be a bit dodgy.

So what have people paid and is there much price diffence between companies/people?

It cost me £1k to do my own conversion.

Quotes on here are around the £1500 mark IIRC.

Strenthening wont be needed in the corsa so that will save you money, brakes wise a set of 16v astra/cavvy brakes will do the job which you can pick up for £50 all in and fit them yourself, the mounting kit which Lee Mitchell will sort you out with might cost a fair bit then theres the engine and box which you will pick up for about £300.

You'll need a decent exhaust as well

Its usually the labour costs thats expensive

Yeah I know when you buy certain parts and fit them yourself you can save a big bundle. Brakes are easy enough, are you sure i wont need strengthening though?

Was going to try and find my own engine too, but could be hard to source one - I wouldnt know where to start looking to be honest.

Im getting my conversion done for £700 drive in,drive out including the engine.

All im doing myself is changing the brakes when the discs and braided lines arrive.

Yes it is.

My mate whos doing it dosnt beleive in ripping ppl off for a conversion that isnt as hard labour as big name companies make out.
They charge stupid money because they know gullable ppl will pay the price.

the only hard bit is the xe wiring in the the ecu,i had to get my mate to do tha for me but the rest is easy and common sence you should have a go yourself

The wiring is the easy part mate, mostly colour for colour in the footwell.
I built my corsa XE for less than £800 including buying the car!

Would love to be able to do it myself on a budget, would be a good achievement, but not a chance. Id be nowhere near confident enough lol

Overall the prices dont seem as bad as I was expecting.

Engine:- anywhere between £150 and £400
Shafts:- astra gte shafts + cv's I give £30, proper hubs/shafts/cv's are a bit more
Brakes:- anywhere from £20 to £50
Exhaust:- It's possible to sleeve the XE down pipe over the original exhaust and weld up, not ideal I know but works.
Mounts:- Ebay usually turns up a few second hand mounts but new 1's are cheap enough
You could go on forever and spend a fortune if you had a mind to but there's really no need.
Obviously there will be other unforeseen small costs, ie oil, filters, ect but that's about all you would need to get going. HTH

what do you mean by proper hubs shafts and cvs? do the astra ones do a good enough job?

i could get the exhaust welded easy,

got 2.0 discs sitting here.

what would i need when you say engine? engine, ecu, transponder???
what about my powersteering pump?

Power steering can be adapted to use the XE pump with no extra parts (if you have the 2 V belt setup)

Corsa GSi shafts with cavalier inner CVs will be fine IMO

Wiring is easy as people have said but Im not sure if some XEs had the immobiliser

Mounts arent too expensive from chris astley either

Just as long as you have a competent mechanic the XE conversion isnt that expensive

hes a old boy, late 40's, hes just changed a bmw engine and hes got to rebuild a subaru car and engine which seized and caused the owner to crash its having a whole new back end, im sure hell do the conversion, but what im hoping is he can do the wireing too

I have diagrams of what wires do what if it would help, seriously though the wiring isnt hard but make sure you dont get an immobilised one if you want to save some trouble

I don't think any red top engined cars had a factory immob?. Anyway if they did it's still simple enough you just put the transponder ring around the corsa ignition barrel and job done. Buying a doner car is always the best way IMO, as you will be able to hear the engine running and you'll know you have all the bits there to do the job, plus you'll be able to sell all the bits you don't need and it'll probably end up being cheaper!
