Are 203mm brakes complete and utter overkill for XC stuff like Nant y arian, llandegla, Marin trail etc and general riding round town etc?
Seen these https://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=1285&categoryId=130
But they only have the V8's which are 203mm in stock and they say they wont get the others in for a couple months
For the price they seem to be a bargin, they get great reviews aswell! But my concern is the size. Do bike brakes work on the same principle of heat build up equaling better braking like with cars?
But if they are overkill then what would people recommend for upto £150?

Can your bike fit 203mm?
My 180mm are plenty for xc tbh

Check http://www.chainreactioncycles.com for sizes.
I can't remember what size I have, but 203mm sounds a bit OTT.
EDIT: Just checked the spec of my stock Demo 7, they are 200mm Avid Juicy 5's. And that is a downhill/freeride specific.
So yeah, 203mm sounds a bit overkill. Check ChainReactionCycles as mentioned

I had 203mm Hope M4's front and rear on my downhill bike. They were glowing red after a 2 hour high speed descent in Les Gets but were still performing okish until they cooled off and the disks warped and the pads glazed over...

I was going to pop up, but got too busy with work
Im in the library now distracting myself from revision
I think I will get the Juicy 5's and some EBC pads, lots pf people have noise problems from avid brakes and a pad change seems to solve those noises

Starting to re-think plans....
Alot of people dont like them (http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/disc_brake_system/product_125128.shtml)
I may consider the Hayes again tbh, just have to find out how expensive it will be to change the rotors to 7"

I wrote 2 huge posts on this last night, but each time my bloody computer froze!
203mm would be too big for youre bike, they could end up ripping the disk mount straight off the frame!
Go for a hope mono mini on the back, and a m4 on the front and you will be sorted!
Trust me, you dont need big rotors, it really wont make a difference on a bike like that, unless youre going downhill!

The only thing I'll say about my Hope M4's, is they suffer from heat fade. So when you go off the brakes during a long decent then back on, it feels like there is no fluid, and consequently no braking until you pump the lever a bit.
Hopefully getting some Magura Gustav's, supposed to be the nuts. For my Demo that is.
Get braided hoses as well

I keep hearing different things from people.
I have been recommended some Formula K18's by the local bike shop, failing that some Shimano and then hope in that order.
Been told to stay away from Hayes and Avids.
I have seen a nice set up on ebay that I fancy, but I dont know what fittings I have on my bike to see if these ones will fit
