I'm looking for my first car, yesterday I saw a 97 Barina GSI and I really like it. It was lowered, with sports exhaust, pod filter, nice wheels. Drove really well too. I was just after your opinions on the good and bad points of this particular model, and maybe even some hints on what to look for.
Thanks heaps,
Matt.

Barina GSi? Where you from mate, Aussie? Chances are it won't be affected by rust as bad as over here, so basically just watch out for the normal things:
Overspray may indicate it's been repaired, badly.
Listen for a clunking noise on start up.
Check for a bluey tinted smoke coming out of the exhaust.
I'm sure others have more things to add

Yeh I'm an Aussie, sorry I probably should've said that.
I don't think it had any of those things so I'm looking good. Although I've heard that they aren't very safe in accidents? Has anyone heard/know of safety ratings etc. Thanks again.

No less safe than anything of comparable age and price.

Spec differences and obviously its badged differently. Engine choices can be strange as well although the Australian ones largely get the same engines as UK.
