Without trying to sound rude but what wages are you on?
Iv just applied for a trained cad technician position for a company called white young green. I didn't ask what the wages would go up to once iv gained experience but il start on a touch over £5 an hour and contracted to do 37.5hours.
Just curious as if the pay does go up quite a bit and i do get the job the sport shall be going

£5 an hour isn't a lot, some contractors I know are being offered £36 an hour, but it depends on the software.

i work as a Structural Design Engineer for Marshall Aerospace, and i am on £25, 500 for 37.5hrs a week, approcx £12.60/hour before tax after starting in October (basically the lowest paid)
we use Catia V5 R16 software 90% in the office so if you use other software packages dont know how the pay would compare

White young green the building services consultancy? I have a friend that does BS CAD and it supposed to be one of the best paid. Think one with reasonable qualifications is on about £19,000 but she is only 19 years old with limited experience.

That £5 surely isn't minimum wage? How old are you?
And of course, as you gain experience, you'll earn more, just like in any job really

He said a touch over £5, so will probs be bang on it, £5.35 or whatever it is now. Dont seem that much for what your doing, to me anyways.
I get more making pies in Morrisons

I think you need to distinguish between Engineers who use CAD and CAD technicians who produce drawings etc.
I'm a Naval Architect; basically a boat design engineer; which includes structural design, aero-hydrodynamics, design etc. I use Solidworks, Vectorworks and Maxsurf. The job I've recently been offered is using all of the above but replacing solidworks with CATIA and a 3 month CATIA course when and if I start.
We had a CAD techncian who was on £17,000 and produced the simple drawings or made drawing updates when changes were needed.

Where I'm doing work experience we have 'CAD technicians', and as Lee said, they literally produce drawings of racking and storage solutions, based on the sketched drawings & measurements given by the Sales guys.
The top position I imagine is relatively well paid, as he lives in MK and drives to Stevenage, spending a fair wack on fuel every month. If he wasn't 'well paid' i.e. £25k/annum, then I would imagine he could get a job in MK doing the same thing, if you get my drift.
I'd say the potential is big, but it takes a while.

I was on £12/hour when I last worked solely in CAD. Not sure what I'm going to get in my new job because I'm going to be programming CNC machines and stuff.

its significantly better than Solidworks one you get used to it though
Although at £35,000 per seat its not cheap either, but there are no plug-ins as such; just the programme with everything already packaged
Solidworks is okay, but now I'm getting more advanced and building much bigger assemblies, it does fall over a lot.

You need to know what crashes Solidworks and avoid doing those things. The problems come in large assemblys mostly so you MUST make sub-assemblys and bring them all together as that is far more memory efficient...
But yea, Catia is pretty good considering as Boeing and the likes use it

I know that, but there are a number of annoying bugs.
one is mating errors which occur when you add in a part; add the necessary mates and have errors occur all the way down the tree. However if you Delete the part, add it in again and use exactly the same mates, its fine 
Deleting mates on something towards the end of the tree can sometimes cause problems further up the tree, which doesn't make any sense, especially as the item in question has no references or mates to the items which end up with errors. Agan deleting the part and bringing it back in again solves the issue but its bloody annoying.
It doesn't crash often, but there are errors which really slow down progress. Remember the intricacy of some of the things I have to build; I have all of the on board systems, so fuel tanks, water tanks, water pipes, fuel feeds, fuel breather runs; steering gear, hydraulic pipes. All fixtures and fittings which you wouldn't even see from the outside view

I've noticed that if you mate parts to planes rather than faces it increases reliability massively. Also never mate to edges as that causes no end of errors.
Are you using Solidworks Routing for your pipes, as that makes it easier to lay out things like that.
